squam1
I think I may have this issue, but the dealer is telling me that I most likely have a spun crankshaft bearing or bad connecting rod. I find this pretty hard to believe given the oil changes I've been doing and the mobil 1 syn oil I have used... Anyway, can anyone describe the noise this actually makes? I know from some other descriptions, it sounds like a ticking or what could be construed as tappet noise (for you pushrod fans out there...), but is it possible this noise would only appear at certain rpms? I noticed the clicking noise somewhere around the 3k rpm range - under load or free revving the engine. I can also say with certainty that it makes no difference if the engine is warm or cold. The dealer is telling me I need a new short block - they are tearing down the engine tomorrow I guess. I'm fairly depressed at this point! If it isn't this tensioner issue, then I'm going to be on the hook for replacing the engine (dealer says the only way this would fail is if I neglected the oil changes and maint...) rao
If you have a spun crank bearing or a bad rod, there wil be no mistaking it because there will either be a lot of noise or one or several holes in the block! More details on the car might help. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT

squam1
also - it was running as smooth as new when I dropped it off this a.m. at the dealership and the avg mileage was the same as normal over the past 3 commuting days I drove it... I would imagine that if there were a crank bearing or rod bearing issue, it would be making the same noise at all rpms, not just around 3k and the mileage, tuning, etc would suffer significantly... rao
You are right. I think your dealer is setting off the BS meter: http://www.torquecentral.com/images/smilies/bsmeter.gif If it was a bearing or a rod (whatever that means, it could be the bearing, the wrist pin or a failure of the rod itself), the engine likely not run at all or run very poorly. rao
Now it could be part of the valvetrain, though the fact that hot or cold doesn't make a difference is liekly important. That coupled with a certain RPM is something of a mystery. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
squam1
well, guess I'll get the verdict tomorrow morning when I speak with the dealer... keep your collective fingers crossed!!

snoman
My dad's 2000 Outback (an earlier version of the 2.5L engine) had the timing belt tensioner fail at ~700 miles. He had to take it back to the dealership two weeks after buying it. Drivability seemed fine when it happened, but the engine made a terrible ticking/slapping sound. It seems like this is a somewhat common problem on brand new Subarus. Don't be discouraged... my dad's Outback that had this problem is still running as good as new (or better) after 106k miles.
