P0011 Help/Advice

Recommended Posts

I pulled everyone's favorite code of p0011, yay for no p0021....I am not a very knowledgeable so asking for help. Had my mechanic tell me everything we did to the oil system to help with giving enough detail for everyone.

Here's the details. Just rebuilt my motor and the turbo went. Nothing major, no metal anywhere. Pick up tube has been checked, oil lines cleaned, oil pump pulled apart and put back together, passenger side banjo bolt screen removed, and the oil was run through a screen and checked. No issues found. New turbo was put on and the code came up after about 50 miles. Saturday we plan on pulling both OCV's checking and cleaning them, we are also going to pull the avcs pulley, idk if that's what it's called which needs some special tool, and going to check clean those as well. What else should I check and look for? We had ran seafoam to clean everything out but I have heard that can clog the OCV's. Also since we are pulling the timing off and everything to get to the avcs we will pull the screen from the banjo bolt on the passenger side. I know the code is about the cam position sensor, but it has new coil packs, cams have been flow checked and recently came back from the machine shop. I just want to make sure we check everything and not leave something out that can lead to my new turbo or motor failing.

Thank you in advance for any advice and help on this.

You may want to swap OCV from side to side and see if the CEL follows, also if you can't find anything wrong.

FWIW, I have both banjo filters removed in my 05.

the service manual may help.

Just swap OCV's, there is a way to make sure they work with a battery...I think I've read that on here.

Those gaskets seldom go bad or "crumble" but I guess your a lucky one. I took my intake AVCS cam gear sprocket apart 3 times and was able to reuse the gasket. Unfortunately Subaru does not sell a replacement gasket so you must purchase a new cam gear.

Thanks. My mechanic has a buddy at Subaru he's going to see if he can pull some strings and get me a gasket. Is there anywhere I can buy the whole unit aside from a dealer and their price gouging?

Im going to thread jack for a second. I've got an 09 OBXT with the same story... Engine spun a bearing, was rebuilt, and listed for sale with 0 miles on rebuild. I bought it.

After 1000 miles it popped [deleted] p0011.

Long dealer's diagnostic story short, I replaced: OCVs, AVCS Sprockets, Timing Belt, Oil filter, and turbo inlet tube. All new parts. Yes, replaced the 1000 mile timing belt with a new one.

Removed a clean banjo screen.

Turbo has very little shaft play, almost not noticeable. I checked both turbine and compressor wheels to be sure.

Short of an oil pickup, oil pump, and cam sensors, i cant get this code to go away. It runs like a bat outta hell after clearing codes, but lasts only 20 miles.

What else have you seen?

After 1000 miles it popped random misfire codes on each cylinder, then p0011.

Be very careful not to run the "bat out of hell" when you have the P0011 code. If you do have a serious issue with this code, it could damage the turbo, because it's in line with the OCV and AVCS.

Stating that you have a misfire on all cylinders tells me that a vacuum hose has come loose. You'll need to pull the TMIC off and check all the vacuum hose connections behind the intake manifold along with the vacuum hoses in front of the intake manifold.

Clearing the codes will of course make the car run better, because it's in a safety/learning mode. This could also cause damage if you haven't figured out the root cause. Check all vacuum hoses to make sure they are secured first before moving on.

Don't run the car hard until you find the root of the cause, otherwise you'll end up damaging the motor/turbo.

Worthy of note, not getting misfire codes anymore. Just before getting the p0011 for the first time.

Not sure how a coil pack could contribute to the p0011 code.

But the name of the code is cam over advanced AND "system operation" so maybe there is a "system" malfunction that includes the coils

When I started diagnosing mine that was one thing I heard could cause them. Granted mine were brand new so I knew it wasn't the issue. So far I've put a new AVCS on the passes get side, cleaned my OVC's (switched to see if the code follows), and inspected all the oil system. Really thinking the passenger side AVCS is my issue after taking it apart.

You mentioned that you reset the codes. It takes at least 20 mins of driving before the ECU has relearn the A/F ratio. Then you will tell what codes will pop up again. Just be careful of the P0011 code, because it's know to kill the turbo.

Check all vacuum hoses first.

I did not see you mentioned taking off the banjo bolt filter on the driver side. Is this one out?

I did not take that one out. I dont have an exhaust cam sprocket tool yet.

I figured since the code is always bank 1, even after swapping OCVs from side to side, then bank 2 is good to go. Maybe theres a good way to get to it without pulling the timing plate.

I hope so too. Did you get it together and run it yet?

Thanks for both posts. When i swapped the turbo inlet pipe, i checked all the hoses and they appeared good. I replaced some smaller ones with silicone that i had. The car runs well until the code comes back. Always while using the cruise control.

And by "bat outta hell" i mean theres no hesitation during acceleration like before. Sarcastic question: how long should i baby it for if the exact mileage differs when the code comes back? Does a deer whistle actually do anything if you never hit a deer?

Truth be told, i had to move after replacing everything related to the AVCS and I needed the car, so i put 5,000 miles on it with the code on and the turbo is still just as good as it was. I pulled the downpipe after every one-way trip.

Well, I believe the system is somewhat in 'series'. So if one side still has a filter and is a bit clogged, it will influence the rest of the oiling system.

And yes, there is a way to take it out without pulling the intake cam sprocket on the driver side. I'll search for the post from hammerhead...
