JazzAvi8r
anyone know what the purpose of the manual button the side of the shift lever on my 94' legacy wagon automatic is?
MilesA
This mode is intended mostly for low-traction driving conditions. It only works in the 2 or 3 gear lever position. In position 2, the transmission will start out in 2, it will not shift up to 3. In 3, the transmission will start in 2 and shift up to 3.

JazzAvi8r
just to clarify, this isn't a switch that changes it to 2WD from AWD, correct? it's merely a gearing switch for the tranny, correct?
MilesA
It just controls the shift programming, as far as I know. The idea is to give you more control when driving is slick conditions. The transmission will start off in 2nd gear, it will not drop down to 1st unless you select it.
