Legacy GT Vs Altima 3.5 SE

Recommended Posts

Hi guys....

basically I was hunting down the legacy gt and it was too much 417 for 48 months LEASE.

And extended warranty costs a fortune.

Well anyway...i found out that altima has 250hp engine with 250lbs of torque. Similar to the lgt just not turbo charged and no AWD and other couple of things different.

1. basically 06 LGT is about 30.5~K MSRP

,altima 3.5 SE is about 25.5K MSRP that came with autodimming mirror with compass.

2. Nissan has a better leasing program than subaru now, much better rates in my opinion.

A. So I was able to get out $330/m for 39m with $500 bank fee and 300$ DMV fee - 4 years.

A1. My dad paid first month, 500$ bank fee and DMV as a early bday present.

B. They gave me free dealer insurance for one week.

C. They gave me free extended warranty because warranty is only 36 months. He wanted to charge me 900$.

So I gained possibly 100$ a month, since the other one was 48 months and I had to get extended warranty. I gave up leather, sunroof, heated seats and AWD and couple of special subby features. However I gained more leg room and more leg room on the back, more trunk space.

You think it was a good choice?

Not a bad choice...but the AWD feature is definately worth the extra money, to me at least. Also, depending on where you are from, FWD might be the best option for you...if you don't live in the snowbelt states.

For me, living in the North East, I would never go back to FWD cars again, cause torque steer is a monster, with such high horsepower figures.

Nonetheless, good choice...and given your age, drive safely...and avoid the crazy insurance prices associated with aggressive driving. Keep the record clean, man...trust me on that one!!! Good luck.

It depends on what you are looking for. How is the torque steer with the front wheel drive and 250/250? that's what I would be more concerned with, but that is just me. If comfort is what you want, then it sounds as though you made the correct choice for you.

there both great cars. Factor in the weather to. If you live in an area that has inclement weather, snow, ice, heavy rain, the LGT would be best. Nissans are great cars. I too looked at the altima before buying my LGT. Its a tough desicion.

I guess you went with the V6 engine? That is a powerful engine, and the altima is a nice car, it is just bad that you see so many of them around. I also have an 03' Altima, but with the 4 cilynder engine. It is a nice car, definitely bigger than the LGT but egornomically the LGT is much better. Although the Auto UP/Down windows ownz the legacy.

Good luck with the new car, you'll enjoy it, and if you don't, you'll only have to live with it for ~3 years.

Not too sure about needing an extended warranty on a leased car and what's dealer insurance???

Anyway, I actually test drove a 3.5 before getting the my LGT. Both were solid rides that pulled strong to the redline. The V6 in the Altima had smoother power delivery, but definitely was not as quick as the LGT. Plus 5 spd Altima's were almost impossible to find at the time. I also liked the roomy interior of the Altima, but the dash design was kinda blah.

The incentives made them almost identical in price- So I went with the turbo engine (ideal for this altitude), AWD, and nicer (IMHO) interior of the LGT.

Congrats on the new ride though. It's a sweet car, so I'm sure you will be happy with your choice...

3.5SE is a nice car in my opinion, however not nearly sporty enough for what i wanted.

I do love nissans though, and I did take a look at the Altimia SE-R but it was just to much $$$ and not worth it. I had my fill of of fwd torque steer in my sentra se-ri moved up from..

I went out with this hot chic once. She was like 110~lbs, small one, tall thought. I loved it how she bounced around in my car and this is with the old car. :-D

If you gave up leather and sunroof, then you should have just found a 2005 LGT non-limited and kept the AWD and heated seats. But if you like the ride, that's all that matters.

One of our local dealers in Minnesota is advertising a new '05 non-limited LGT for $22,995, or $279/month for a 48-month lease (I think they want something like $2,500 down for the lease).

Of course, it would have been more effective to ask this question before signing on the dotted line. :icon_tong

Altimas are good cars. It's not as if you bought a ____. (fill in blank with lousy car) I haven't checked the Consumer Reports reliability rating recently--is it considered reliable?

Now, was the Altima a better choice for you? Well, we don't know much about you, where you live, where you drive, how many passengers you plan to carry and how often, etc.

For example, if you live somewhere like southern Texas that doesn't get any snow, you don't need AWD. There's not much use getting an AWD car if you're not going to drive in snow or other conditions that make use of it. (For the moment I'm putting aside other possible handling advantages of AWD.) OTOH, if you live somewhere like the northeast that gets lots of snow and rain, AWD is awfully nice to have. Ask me how I know. :)

Cars are depreciating assets. It's wise for younger people to resist the urge to spend as much money as possible on a car. You're to be credited for limiting your spending on the car.

That said, you probably could have negotiated the Legacy's price way down, to be competitive with the Altima. OTOH, if you were able to knock the Altima's price commensurately way down, then you still came out ahead financially. OTOH again, since you gave up heated seats, leather, sunroof, etc., you could have bought a non-limited Legacy--that would have brought the relative cost of the two cars closer together. OTOH again, you like having the "larger" trunk and rear seat legroom of the Altima (unverifed--I'm just repeating what you wrote). OTOH again, you could have opted for a Legacy wagon, and had *way* more cargo room. (Check out my avatar.)

Re extended warranty: you didn't tell us how long it is. If you're talking about covering the time between when the standard warranty expires and when the lease ends, that's a wise move. I know that I would not want to lease a car without warranty coverage for the full term of the lease. But if you got an extended warranty beyond that time, then I'm scratching my head as to why.

I don't do leases, so I'll leave the number-crunching on them to others. JOOC, why did you opt for a lease?

HTH.

Sounds like you're happy with the car and that's what matters. I think I would have looked around for a left-over or slightly used 05 LGT, but I like AWD and don't plan on buying any more FWD.

I was considering the Altima SE-R, and it was a tough choice between that and the LGT. However, the subie won with the AWD, and the SE-R would get too much attention as well. The Altima's a nice car, no question about it, but when you're comparing the SE to the LGT, I think the LGT wins easily, but LGT is also much more than the Altima SE. From a financial aspect, I think you made the right decision. The Altima's got a wicked engine in it, you won't be missing too much. The Altima's also got folding rear seats!!!!!
