Advice on replacing the head unit

Recommended Posts

I'm tired of using those cheap FM transmitters to play music off my phone, so I plan to replace the head unit with a modern one with bluetooth, aux input, etc. The current unit is the basic one with only a radio and a cassette player. Underneath the unit is a small compartment.

I know that the small compartment and the stock head unit come off together, but I want to replace the head unit with one of the same size so I can keep that compartment. It's quite useful for storing things. Does anyone know the dimensions of the stock head unit, and also the type of connector it has? I want to replace it with a new one of the same dimensions so I can have the same setup of radio on top and compartment on the bottom.

A great head unit is the Pioneer DEH-X6700BS. My girlfriend has one in her vehicle and she loves it. Includes CD player, USB port, and bluetooth. You'll need a Metra 70-8901 wiring harness. The existing factory bracket will work without issue on the new radio, so no dash kit is required. A word from someone with experience, if you're keeping the single din, move the pocket to the top position. Whenever you use the cupholder, it blocks the radio when installed in the top position. I have a double-din NAV unit in my car now and it works fantastic.

Any single DIN head unit should fit in the same opening and you should be able to use the stock mounting brackets. Get a wiring adapteer like this one and wire to the new head unit

+1 to Subaru using standard single din units in our cars. No problem to get something in there with the correct wiring adapter kit.

+1 to putting the pocket on top and radio down. I did that way back when I first got the car and I've been very happy with it ever since.

I'm the weirdo that kept my 13ish year old aftermarket head unit and replaced my ash tray with a little usb/microSD enabled MP3 player connected to my head unit aux.

Ya I thought it was weird that my Outback came with the aftermarket head unit on the bottom of the pocket until I replaced the whole unit (an old Alpine unit from 2001) with my double-din and when the cupholder is open, I can't see the top half of my screen. It's the little things you take for granted.
