Timing Belt Help

Recommended Posts

I have a quick question. I will be replacing the timing belt on my 2012 Subaru Legacy 2.5 SOHC, when I go to line everything up, should I use the little timing notches on the crank and cam sprockets instead of the arrows? What if I don't have those timing notches?

You want to use the line mark, not the arrow mark. All cam sprockets have the notches, they are part of the design. If you have a bright colored paint marker, you can cover the timing notches with a splotch of paint so they are easier to see. A good work light will help, too.

When I removed the belt the driver's side cam gear jumped out of alignment, can I turn it clockwise to put it back in alignment?
Yes, just don't move the crankshaft. Your pistons are sitting midway in their bores, they can't collide with the valves in that position. You'll need something to hold the driver-side cam in position. It is under spring pressure from the valve springs and will not stay aligned unless you hold it there while you put the belt in place. Having another person to help you makes it easier. Make sure you are replacing the other timing belt hardware including the tensioner and idlers while you are doing this job, BTW.

When does the timing belt need to be replaced on 2013 4 cyl non turbo Legacy need to be replaced.
For 2013 2.5i models, the engine uses a timing chain instead of a belt. You don't have to worry about periodic timing belt service.
