mclarenf3
This is more a curiosity thing, but what is the noise I hear as I start the car (push-button) and when I open the car door after turning off the car? Sounds like a gear grinding for about 1 second somewhere behind the dashboard.
ammcinnis
Most likely the steering column lock. "If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." ~ The Cheshire Cat (Alice in Wonderland)
Ronin3.6R
The above sounds 100% accurate... I hear it as well not so much on start but on exit. Sounds like a worm gear or similar locking into place. It's a nasty sound if you ever owned a C5 Corvette......
mclarenf3
It might be when I open my door, but I'm pretty sure it's on startup.
Ronin3.6R
It has to unlock at start but I definitely hear it when I open my door as well https://view.joomag.com/subaru-legacy-manuals-2016-legacy-owners-manual/0763509001437145530?page=
mclarenf3
Yep, that must be it. Curiosity has been satisfied!
securityguy
I really don't think it's the steering column lock. All of our cars do this. Not exactly sure what it is but I believe it has nothing to do with the steering lock based on issues I've experienced in the past with the steering rack. I keep meaning to ask the dealer what that darn noise is and keep forgetting.
ammcinnis
All of our cars do this. Neither our 2015 Legacy nor our 2016 Outback (both key-start) does. The column lock is manually actuated on key-start models and electrically actuated on pushbutton-start models. mclarenf3
I'm fairly certain it is something to do with the steering wheel lock. When I get into the car, before starting it up (with push-button) I can feel the wheel is locked. After the car is started (and I hear the noise) the wheel is free to turn. Same when I shut the car off, the wheel is free to turn. But once I open the driver's car door and hear the noise, the wheel is locked again. Tried it out yesterday after this thread to confirm.
