Noise from dash

Recommended Posts

This is more a curiosity thing, but what is the noise I hear as I start the car (push-button) and when I open the car door after turning off the car? Sounds like a gear grinding for about 1 second somewhere behind the dashboard.

I really don't think it's the steering column lock. All of our cars do this. Not exactly sure what it is but I believe it has nothing to do with the steering lock based on issues I've experienced in the past with the steering rack. I keep meaning to ask the dealer what that darn noise is and keep forgetting.

All of our cars do this.

Neither our 2015 Legacy nor our 2016 Outback (both key-start) does. The column lock is manually actuated on key-start models and electrically actuated on pushbutton-start models.

I'm fairly certain it is something to do with the steering wheel lock. When I get into the car, before starting it up (with push-button) I can feel the wheel is locked. After the car is started (and I hear the noise) the wheel is free to turn.

Same when I shut the car off, the wheel is free to turn. But once I open the driver's car door and hear the noise, the wheel is locked again.

Tried it out yesterday after this thread to confirm.
