Nfrank89
Hey everyone, I just bought an invidia down pipe and up pipe (new from amazon) and installed them along with a stage 2 base map from the romraider forum last night. sure enough, after 4 pulls I blew the side off of my stock intercooler. This freaked me out so I reloaded the stock map and strapped the intercooler back together. I took it out for a quick test drive and I am easily hitting 21-24 psi... Question: I understand there used to be issues (reading old threads from ~2008) with the wastegate flap hitting the divorcing boss in the invidia downpipe. Does anyone know if they ever updated the design to prevent this? Worst case I'll have to remove it and check for interference marks. Any other thoughts on the overboosting issue? I'll try loading the stage 2 map again to see if it handles it better but i'm a little worried about the boost being that high. EDIT: Problem Solved! See quote below: Alright well it is clear that invidia has not fixed this problem. http://i65.tinypic.com/2vl9u2u.jpg The divorcing plate was definitely interfering with the wastegate flap. I was reaching unsafe boost levels (~20 - 24 psi.) due to this. Let it be known that all invidia downpipes (for 05-06 LGTs at least) should have the divorce plate ground down prior to installation. I used an angle grinder to remove ~3.5-4mm of material and followed up with a wire wheel to smooth it out. http://i68.tinypic.com/14wrvgo.jpg Now the car is safely boosting no more than ~18psi. I feel much more comfortable now. Hopefully this helps others. I wish someone had explicitly pointed this out somewhere. If they did, I could not find it anywhere. Redslaya
running the stock map with a downpipe will cause issues and destroy your motor. stop doing pulls without a tune immediately! checkfor Vac leaks and boost leaks. you will need an ew intercooler as it is gonna leak like crazy with it strapped together
Nfrank89
Thanks for the quick response! I just picked up a used OEM intercooler that I will seal up and strap then keep as a backup. I just needed something to get around for now. I'll be ordering an aftermarket intercooler soon though.
Max Capacity
Make sure you really have the stage 2 map loaded. Both my Invidia DP's would not mate without trimming the divorce plate. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN7349_zpscndp67cl.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN7350_zpsn4zi6uqv.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4753.jpg I did remove the heat wrap a few weeks back and found lot's of rust under it. The up pipe is still wrapped. Here's something else your going to want, http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN7058_zpsdclzvyn3.jpg GS tmic. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Nfrank89
How recently did you purchase your down pipes? When you say they would not mate are you saying they would not physically fit up to the turbo without trimming or are you saying the waste gate flap would hit the divorce boss on the downpipe? Max Capacity
Yep, the waste gate flap hit the plate, I have air tools so cutting it back was no biggy. I've had them for many years. Well the DP on the Spec came from BarManBean used. Fit up is great other wise. All bolts line right up. I also have gold heat reflective foil on the inside of the stock heat shields. This tmic has the gold foil on the underside over the turbo end. My Spec's has the black heat coating on it. IMO the plate has no real benefit in a street car, either way plate or no plate really doesn't matter that much, race car may be different. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Marvick08GT
Did you cut the whole thing or clearance? Blouch told me they recommended removing it completely... Thats ludicrous! I was just going to clearance it and see what happens. GS TMIC is incredible... so easy and so efficient. I hope it stays that way with the Dom... Nfrank89
The downpipe I ordered is a bit newer and they have changed the divorce plate design (ive been calling it the divorce boss, not sure what the standard term is) but I'm not sure if it fixes the interference problem with the wastegate flap. I'm about to go pull it and find out. here is a picture of the new design. does it look shorter than yours?
Marvick08GT
It's an illusion because the metal is shiny. Just pull the wastegate actuator and move it by hand.
Nfrank89
No, it's deff not an illusion. This divorce plate has rounded ends. I just cant tell if it is shorter than the older ones. I just came across this post on another forum "i have heard of some (i believe but dont quote me) version 2 divorced downpipe issues to when the wastegate flapper opens up it hits the downpipe thus hitting fuel cut. All of the version 3 and newer divorced downpipes have been fixed."
Max Capacity
That appears to be as short as I've cut mine back. I think it's about a 1/2", is what I removed. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. My tuner is http://www.tuningalliance.com I wonder if anyone else has the same picture of there divorce plate after many miles ? 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
