ALASKANSUBIE
Hello all, I just recently purchased my first subaru, a 05 legacy gt. Its got the DOHC turbo in it, however, the head gasket had gone bad. So i will be redoing those and am looking for advice on gaining some performance without spending a ton of money. It came with a typhoon cold air intake but other than that it is pretty much stock. Any advise is welcome im not very experienced with Subaru's at the moment. I have a lot of experience building mopars so im hoping that will help make this more simple. I dont know much about about turbos or how changes to the intake system will effect the motor.
xtea
1. Get a stock intake until you get a protune or your engine will run lean and cause more knock leading to ringland failure and a new engine eventually. 2. Remove all banjo bolts (oil line union screw) and keep OCIs to 3000 or 5000 and clean the banjo bolts every other oil change. 3. Source a used catless up pipe on nasioc/ebay/here or go new catless. 4. Get a high flow catted downpipe or turbo back of your choice. AT THE SAME TIME AS #4 5. Get a pro tune from cryotune, Tunning Alliance, or your local subie pro. YOU CANNOT RUN MOST MODS WITHOUT A TUNE. I don't care what your experience is with other cars, subies are finicky about mods. If you want more power then say 275 to the wheels you are looking at turbo upgrades and much more extensive supporting mods.
FJuan
First of all, do you know if the car has been protune before? As xtea mentioned, the CAI without a proper tune causes the A/F no good. It has been proven that the stock intake is good up to Stage III (larger turbo upgrade). Also, you will need to know if the Uppipe is gutted (aftermarket) along with the downpipe. Since this is a used car, you'll need to find out what the car has before upgrading parts. Keep in mind, each time you modify the engine you will need a retune to max out the benefits. So, do your homework, figure out what you have versus what you want out of the car. This will save you some time and money from having it tune each time. My wife's balls are delicious. ALASKANSUBIE
So i have begun tearing the motor apart and upon further inspection it has been kept stock with the exception of the typhoon cold air. The turbo inlet hose looks like it is starting to show some wear on the bottom from rubbing against something just under the turbo... Is it worth the expense for a new one maybe a cobb silicone inlet hose or would it be more efficient to just clean out the old one? Thanks for any help! The stock inlet pipe deteriorates over time and to me it makes sense to replace it while you are in there. A new stock one is fine, the silicone is OK if you want to splurge but there is no real need. Also, put on a new turbo oil drain hose and clamp (if somebody didn't cover that already). Try and restore the stock intake, it works fine and there is nothing wrong with it other than it is too quiet for some tastes.

Probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway..protune isn't the same as a E-Tune, right? Mainly asking because I'll be getting a TA E-Tune in the next week or so and have been thinking about going turboback with the exhaust and new downpipe soon. Max Capacity
Great choice in a Tuner. Make sure the car runs well and the MAF is clean and the plugs are newish, so the data you send him is good. Have you replaced the ground wires from the engine to the chassis ? 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).
