slackin at work
hey everyone. I just signed up! so I have a 1985 VW vanagon which I converted to a 1996 ej25 DOHC out of a 96 legacy. Ive been a VW guy all my life, both air and water cooled, and this is my first venture into anything japanese. well, anyway, Im now trying to hook up the AC and I can not seem to find the compressor fittings anywhere. apparently 1996 was an odd-ball year in the area and it was a one year compressor. I'm hoping someone may have a parts car or something to help me out. both ej22 and ej25 appear to use the same ac setup for the year… at least from my part number searches. I mic'd up the ports where the orings seat on the compressor and they are: high-side: .48" and low side: .74" any help or thoughts would be appreciated. thanks guys! Brighton96
I just found this out myself when I went to reinstall the AC in my 96. Most of the hoses are different and the size of the inlet and outlet port on the compressor are different sizes :/
slackin at work
thanks for the replies. Im in central virginia. I have the compressor. I just need the fittings. then I'll use them to make custom hoses. I had the idea to change the compressor to the 98-02 compressor. they look very similar to mine, but then realized the mounts are different. I'm still looking but, worst case is i'll take the compressor to a machine shop and see if they can machine the ports bigger. both ports are ~1/16" too small for my fittings. Stevo F
I think that's around the time they cchanged from R12 to R134a refrigerant. I know my '98's use R134a and I'm looking at a '95 Legacy that still uses R12. Not sure which year it actually changed or what parts were changed at that time. Brighton96
The change happened in most cars between late 95 and early 96, my car was built in March of 96 and it came with R134A from the factory
doublechaz
Great! Another thing that is weird about mine. My 95 is 134a. Goes nicely with my 3.90 final drive that most sources say should be 4.11.
slackin at work
well, after hunting and finding the right part #s… I found out the high side is NLA from the dealer but the low side is. so ordered that from the dealer. luckily found a used high side on ebay. so both are on their way. it sucks to have to drop another couple bills on the AC at this point, but Im all ready into it so deep... got no choice now. thanks again guys for confirmations. and thanks for making this 'outsider' feel welcome on the forum. -chris

This is a great group to be in- seems like people who drive old Legacy's are the best!
