Rear Deck Rattle and a couple other questions.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I recently purchased a 2011 Legacy. I've been reading through the forums but I have a couple concerns I haven't found the answer too. First of all there is a pretty noticeable rattling noise coming from the rear deck when I play any music. I tried listening closely, and manually holding different things to dampen the sound but I was not able to find the source. I saw a few threads mentioning a similar issue on the 4th gen, but none for the 5th. Is this a common issue? If so, does anyone know how I can stop it?

I would also like to change the cvt fluid and diff oil, but I am concerned that the car has around 80k on it. Is it still safe to do at this point if its never been done before?

Lastly, the satellite antenna seems to be coming loose from the car. The rear portion of it is slightly raised off of the car. Is it just mechanically attached or is there some sort of adhesive that is coming loose? Im afraid to mess with it and damage it further because Im unsure how it is supposed to be attached.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Welcome!

Satellite antenna if it is OEM, is held on by a single nut. You need to get under the headliner to tighten it.

Rear deck rattle is something that you're just going to have to track down. A few guys put some thin closed cell foam on the underside of the deck panel, but AFAIK, its not a widespread issue. Spend some time on the bottom side of it, you may have a harness or something loose in the trunk.

Change the CVT fluid now, there will be no harm in doing so. IIRC, on the newer ones, Subaru is suggesting a flush at 75k miles, so you're still in that window. Just make sure you get the correct fluid for the Gen1 CVT.

Thanks for the reply, I looked at the antenna and it doesn't seem loose at all. It doesn't budge even slightly when i try to move it. I'm thinking maybe its just like this, but i have seen any other Legacies with the sat antenna to compare too.

Thank for the tips on everything else. It looks like Im going to probably end up at the dealership to get the cvt fluid changed as I can't fin the oem fluid for sale anywhere for a decent price. They're asking about $230-$250 (I forgot exactly) to do the job but I can only find the fluid in $275 buckets.

I chased a rattle that I though was in the car but turned out to be the front corners of the hood. Simple twist of the hood bumpers solved that mystery.

Thats interesting. I'm pretty sure this one is coming from the rear deck, but ill keep this in mind. Thanks

^It's a good place to check actually. I had a noisy front end rattle that I was convinced was either something in my suspension or related to my tow hook license plate mount. Turned out it was actually my hood, and all it took to rectify it was backing out the rubber stoppers a few turns. It may not be the spot for your rattle, but it easy enough and quick enough to check.

I had a rattle in the back like yours and I did the same thing by playing something and pressing random spots without finding anything. The rattle ended up being the middle seat belt box located in the trunk. It's a white box clipped to the underside of the rear deck. I stuck a rubber washer between the metal and the plastic case and no more rattle. I wonder if this is your issue too.
