So one thing that has always annoyed me about the JDM tails, and even the USDM Tails, is that, theres not enough illumination from behind. If its US, only the bottom lights up/brakes. If its the JDM Tails, only the top lights up/brakes. So I finally took the time to do this mod and document it, the best i could to help others if they were interested!

Tools Required for removing Tail Lamps:

Socket Wrench

8mm Socket

Each Tail Lamp has (4) 8mm bolts

 

Tools/Parts Required for Modification:

-Liberty 03-05 JDM Tail Lights with Harness

-Legacy 05-07 USDM Tail Light Harness or 7443 Socket from 05-07 Legacy

 

7/8 Hole Saw Drill Bit

Power Drill

7443 Bulbs

16 Gauge Primary Wire

T-Tap Connectors

Male Connectors

Pliers

Vise Grips

Wire Strippers/Crimper Tool

Electrical Tape

Dremel Trimming Tool

 

Step 1: JDM Drivers Side Tail Light

-Drill New Hole using 7/8 Drill Bit

-Make sure to Trim each 7443 Socket. Only remove the 2 smaller Nubs. And leave the 2 wider nubs.

-Trim Out 2 Notches to fit 7443 Socket. Only had a dremel tool, but very carefully trimmed until, i was able to get the socket in securely. Once its in, you’re good!

 

Step 2: Prepare Wiring Harness to tap into JDM Harness.

A. Strip Wires from USDM 7443 Sockets

B. Cut about 7-8” of Primary Wire for Each colored wire. And Strip each end

C. Connect the wires to each color

D. Secure Tightly with Electrical Tape

E. Strip/Crimp Male Connectors to both 7443 bulbs. 3 per socket, 6 total. Ensure each connection is solid and tight.

F. Install T-Taps to JDM Harness

G. Connect Male Connectors to Corresponding T-Tap

 

Step 3: Modify 7443 Sockets

-Shave off 2 smaller nubs on both. Leave only the wider nubs.

 

Step 4: Final Testing:

-Connect Each Tail Lamp and make sure all lights are functioning properly

 

Cleaning Up:

-Once everything works perfectly, clean up the wiring harness, and make it look neat, for an easy re-installation.

 

Final Results!

Enjoy your newly Illuminated JDM Tail Lamps!
