DIY: HID Plug and Play Install w/ pics

Recommended Posts

Per the request of another member, I'm making an install walk-through for installing an HID kit into our cars. It won't be as in-depth as my mirror install since my lights were already installed, but I'll do my best.

I understand it is not a complicated process, but for someone who has never worked on their car before, it can be intimidating! This is to help put anyone's mind at ease who wants to buy a kit and get their feet wet with modding their car.

This is the kit that I bought.

I opted for the 4300k with Phillips bulb upgrade, and it is NICE. The light output is insane over stock. After installing Morimoto LED fogs, I wish I would have gotten my HIDs in 5000k for a better color match, but I digress.

The beauty about running these on our cars is that there is no relay harness needed, making it all plug-and-play. The reason being is that our factory halogens draw 55w, whereas these only draw 35w. During my time researching, I found that 55w kits don't put out much more usable light and have a shorter lifespan, so I would stay away.

Also the CANbus is not needed for our cars.

On to the install!!

Make sure your headlights are turned to off. Not auto, since you don't want to risk them turning on on accident for some reason.

Items Required:

Subaru Legacy

HID Kit

Rag

Optional:

Extra double sided tape

Zip Ties

First off, you'll need to mount the ballasts. Wipe the area down with the rag to ensure that the ballasts get good adhesion. Make sure that it's fairly warm too. If it's too cold, you may not get good adhesion but this can be fixed by warming up the ballast and the car with a hair dryer.

Next step is to CAREFULLY take the bulb out of the packaging, and put it in the headlight. Do NOT touch the glass on the bulb with your bare hands. The oil on your skin can shorten the life of the bulb.

Once you have the ballast mounted and the bulb in the headlight, the next step is to connect everything!!

That's pretty much it! The last thing that you can do (optional) is to secure that little black box to something. I used zip ties because that's what I had on hand, but double sided tape would be much easier.

That's it! Let me know if you have any questions, or want any pictures of anything else.
