Replacement Fuel Pump Strainer - Part Number Found

Recommended Posts

For some reason Subaru doesn't sell just the fuel pump strainer or pre-filter. You can buy the primary fuel filter, but are out of luck on the strainer unless you want to buy a new OEM pump. In the process of replacing all my fuel filters to address a pressure issue I dug into this more and found you can get one by skipping Subaru and going to their source.

Our cars have a bucket (actually a mini surge tank/swirl pot) mounted pump where the fuel pump strainer touches the bottom. In the stock forum this is generally with little to no force. But with bigger aftermarket pump, particularly ones that don't use the clips like the Warbro 255 and Areomotive 340, this force on the bottom of the strainer can be quite high. Also many aftermarket pumps tend to come with strainers made for other cars.

The popular DW65c and DW300 for instance come with strainers designed for a Honda. This strainer works though because it has internal supports that prevent the pump inlet from being constrained when pushed against the bottom of the bucket. It's smaller than the OEM style though, and only feeds from one corner of the bucket.

The AEM 50-1215 comes with a log shaped strainer with only a corser mesh rolled up inside. This type of strainer is designed more for pump that are suspended in the tank by a hanger, and is really too long to fit our bucket. If pressed agains a surface the corse mesh allows some fluid to still flow but it's restricted.

The Cobb and Quantum fuel pumps are the only ones I can find with an OEM style strainer.

If you want an OEM style strainer as part of a filter refresh or aftermarket pump install fortunately Subaru's OEM supplier, Denso, DOES sell the part:

The Japan made and US made filter functionally seem quite comprable. The US made one has an easier to use mounting clip and more robust standoffs. The JDM ones appears to have nicer plastic and a thicker filter element. The aftermarket one feels cheap, and cost about the same as the Denso. All three are identical in height and size, so are 100% cross comparable. I ended up putting a US made one in due to ease of install.

Thanks for sharing. Just ordered direct from Denso. Once it arrives I'll get the honda part out of the system. Just received the main filter bucket so I will not have to mess with this for some time after install.

Denso 952-0090 is same as Subaru OEM as you get. Just purchased a DEATSCHWERKS pump and the sock retainer has a tiny serrated washer that is ridiculous to install. Same with Denso 952-0086.

And I dont know if the Denso sock is E85. Just know that little retainer washer sucks. Plan ahead otherwise you wont get it done. Subaru does not sell that sock separate from the pump.

bumping this up..

I just bought a couple of these.

Did anyone ever attempt to replace the main filter? looks like a real pain to replace. I am fighting an interesting lean condition on partial constant acceleration. did not find a vac leak. I am now suspecting the fuel pump or dirty filters. I never touched this stuff before. Car has 173K.

The filter on the pump? Yeah, it's not fun; I can do it in a hour or so in a hotel parking lot though :spin:

It's basically just the same steps as replacing the pump.

Cobb has a decent instruction sheet on their site.

If I were to replace the sock, I would honestly replace the pump so I didn't have to go back again anytime soon.
