Brightons Money Pit

Recommended Posts

I've thought about it a lot and I plan on doing it, but inspection is coming up soon :/ I've been looking a junkyard that has them in stock for a car that's built in the same 6 months as mine and will remove them for me since I really don't have to buy/bring a sawzall

Weekly update

I got the headlights rewired again but this time with new H4/9003 connectors and it fixed the issue of the low beam/fog lights staying on when the highbeams are turned on. I installed the new grill clips and the new parts for the rear wiper arm.

I also replaced one of the headlight ballasts since it started to flicker.

Besides the small maintenance items, I also finished the height adjuster handle and got it installed!

Funny you said you fixed the issue of your lows/foglights turning off with your high beams. I prefer the fogs to stay on, so much so that I purposely modified the switch to do that.

I want mine off. My retros overpower the fogs anyway lol, they are useless with highs on

Here in VA and I believe the other commonwealth states, the fogs HAVE to turn off when the high beams are on, it won't pass inspection otherwise, and since I didn't want to deal with wiring in a switch, I opted to just run them off the low beam. When I wired my HIDs, they only tap into the low beam on one side of the car, so I had unused low beam wires. My high beams suck in comparison to fogs+HIDs, but this was just to make it legal.

You should get bixenon HIDs... No better way man. Did you retro yours?

Yeah I dunno, I already have to have them angled really low so people don't flash their high beams at me, But the previous owner installed the JDM HID headlights, so I bought the morimoto retrofit kit, it's just a plug and play harness and since the headlights already had HID projectors in them, it was very easy to get them swapped in, and right now I'm running 6300k bulbs.

Sorry no pictures for this update. :/

I didn't do much today but I did find out that E85 kills my MPG so I'm not going to keep experimenting with it. I last mixture was 3gal of E85 and 14gal of 93 regular gas. From that mixture I got 17.2mpg instead of my typical 18.6+ so not a big drop but since none of the driving conditions changed, I'm going to stop messing with it.

I did however get around to installing my other spoiler with all new gaskets since I managed to find a white one at a junkyard and the tailgate was leaking since I installed the old spoiler without sealing it properly. SO now my old repainted spoiler will be up for sale on the classified section!

weird, my 2.2 averages 27mpg on 87 gas

The most I've ever gotten in this car was 25mpg and that was flat highway driving while running 0w-20 oil. I drive it hard, have larger wheels and tires than factory and have other mods that kill mpg, so I'm not worried about it, still better than my truck that averages 14mpg around town haha.

At yesterday's fill up, I calculated 25.09 MPG, my highest calculation to date. I've recorded my fuel economy over the last 3100 miles and I am averaging about 23.4 mpg with mixed highway/city and general not giving a shit about how heavy I mash the skinny pedal.

It's been a while since I've even driven my car, let alone work on it. But today it got some attention in the form of bumper mods!

I took the bumper off and cut out the "teeth" and then installed a Buick front lip, then sanded and repainted the areas I trimmed/cut up so now it's all pretty again.

This was the bumper before. The areas I painted a while ago started to chip and look like crap because I didn't prep the surfaces properly.

I filled in all the extra holes and scrapes using bumper filler/glue and then sanded it down starting with 80 grit and then progressively moving up to 1000 grit.

This was after it was all sanded

While I had the bumper off, I prepped and resprayed the underside of the core support and this time I covered the new paint in clear bedliner to make sure it'll last longer than the last time I painted it.

This was the bumper installed with the lip on it, I kept all the hardware from the donor car, so it was really easy to installed and only required a few holes be drilled and a heat gun to relax/reform the lips shape

In case you were wondering, the lip is off a 97 Buick lesabre, it's an OEM part so any lesabre from that generation will come with it and will work.

It's been a while since I did anything with my car, so after about two months of not even washing it, it got some love today. I washed and waxed it, reinstalled the spoiler using new hardware so that now it sits properly. I wired up and installed new LED fogs. The other cheap LEDs I had were junk and halogens just look bad in comparison to the HID headlights.

These are the bulbs in case you're interested.

This is them after install, the HIDs were still warming up when that picture was taken but the LEDs and HIDs are 6000k so they match perfectly.

I made little aluminum brackets to mount the LED ballasts

Luckily no one will every see all the extra wiring behind the bumper haha

Short Update: The past couple days I've had this occasional weird shutter and attempt to stall while idling at traffic lights, and up until now I'd just been monitoring it without worrying about fixing it, but it did it on my way home today and then shortly after while driving it did it again but also accompanied with a couple small backfires from the passenger side, so I suspect my cat(s) are clogged or in the process of being clogged, and with 170k ish on the clock, they don't have long for this world as it is, so I'll be pulling them off this weekend to inspect and ghetto fix (drill through them) until I can order a new cat and a test pipe for the second cat.

Also weirdly enough I have no CEL from this. But I'll have pictures/follow up this weekend

We had some warm weather over the weekend so I spent the day getting the cats out of the car, I ended up using a sawzall and grinder more then I did sockets and wrenches.

http://i1317.photobucket.com/albums/t637/96Brighton/Cat%204_zpsntdrxxda.jpg

The initial plan was to gut the cats to buy myself some time so that I could order an OEM cat but one of the 02 sensor bungs broke away from the cat. So I had to order a new cat and a new 02 sensor which in an of itself was a complex pain in the ass (the parts store sent a completely different part and didn't tell me that they didn't have what I ordered in stock)

In the down time between waiting on parts, I fixed some of the crappy welds on the cat back and I painted it.

http://i1317.photobucket.com/albums/t637/96Brighton/Cat%206_zps0wuonrwu.jpg

And on the plus side, I think I found the annoying rattle that I'd had since I got the car, the metal shield between the exhaust and driveshaft had two of the bolt holes ripped through, so I made a little bracket and then cleaned and painted the shield.

The exhaust got finished a couple days ago but the weathers been nasty out so didn't get a chance to get decent pictures. The new cat went in no problem, I gutted the second cat and in the future the second cat will get replaced with a catless test pipe, and the car seems to run a little better and sounds a little louder now which is a plus.
