I'm not as concerned with it breaking as I am with it not passing emissions. If there's visible smoke the car would fail. At that point I would have a decision to make: Repair the car or replace it. At this point the car is not due for an emissions test until the summer.

 

If I should decide I want to repair the car my thought is to do it now. I've had many situations where I've held off on a repair (cracked windshield being an example), eventually repaired it, and then got rid of the vehicle a few months later.

 

As an FYI I have been pulling several hard accelerations over the past few days and have not witnessed any smoking. So I'm not sure it was even smoking Friday evening.
