Continued kudos.

My question is how did you get a front mount tstat housing.

I was thinking it was my eyesight for the longest, but no, there it is on the front of the block.

O.

The water pump/t-stat housing is an '06+ EJ25 N/A unit. I also want to note that I had to remove the lightweight flexplate from the EJ222 bottom end, as it is smaller in diameter than the flexplate from the EJ25D, and so after they were swapped, the EJ22D was then dropped in. Put 200mi on the engine already. Seems to respond pretty well, and response is almost SOHC-like.

Update:

Restored voltage stabilizer and A/C systems to their former eptitude.

Removed transmission pan to bang out a giant dent, then P-Greyed the edges, put it back on, and filled it back up.

Also, the 22D seems to tolerate 87-89 octane well enough, and it helps with low-end torque, but the ECU likes it better when 91-93 are used...and it is programmed to run primarily on 87, which means it is adapting to the hybrid well.

I may not have been clear with the EJ22D built, so here goes.

EJ20D cams, valves, valve springs and retainers, heads w/EJ20D head bolts (reused).

EJ25D big plenum head gasket.

EJ25D ECU (stock '97 Legacy Outback 7X ECU).

EJ222 block w/EJ222 head gaskets & oil baffle.

EJ205 oil pump (detailed).

EJ257 coolant crosspipe w/sensor, oil pan, and timing assembly.

EJ257 timing belt (Gates blue).

EJ257 Moroso oil pickup.

What are the benefits of the EJ257 crossover pipe and/or what made you choose it.

Greater coolant capacity and it is more straight than the older Phase 1 types. Some work is needed to make it work, but nothing anyone with extra wiring, wiring skills, and a grinder cannot handle.

i forget if you mentioned why the ej222 block over the ej22e? would there be any difference? im debating doing a hybrid for one of my outbacks, engines i have available to play with are ej22e, ej25d, ej253 and a couple ej205 sitting around in different states of disarray. id like to end up with a NA higher torque build for playing in the desert.

The 222 has high compression pistons (-3cc) and the thrust bearing moved to the 5th position as opposed to the 22E's, which have -14.5cc (1990-1996) & -12.5cc pistons (1997-1998). If you want to do a nice hybrid that will be extra reliable, I have a good suggestion.

1997-1998 EJ25D heads.

EJ253 block.

EJ257 head gasket.

205 oil pump.

This hybrid is popular and pretty much the go-to for people restoring 2.5 engines to their 2nd Gens, but want the combo of added power and reliability. The 205 oil pumps are the most capable oil pumps you have in your possession, and so I added that into the mix.

90-96 EJ22E = Non interference.

97-98 EJ22E = Interference.

99-01 EJ221/2/3 = Interference.

Even with interference, the EJ22E is a fair distance away from comparing to an EJ22D w/the same or greater compression, especially one that uses a far superior bottom end. ;)

I have a complete EJ222 if you want to trade for some parts.

what kind of parts you thinking?

the ej253 is supposed to be a rebuild for my daughter's forester, but i will have the one out of hers as a replacement to play with as well. the ej25d is in one of the cars now, im hoping to use the heads off of it for the new build. both the ej205 engines i have were spares, but id like to keep one of them intact to toss into smokey at some point.

What state is the 22E and the 205 in? I've been looking for both for a while now in good condition.

the 22e has probably upwards of 300k on it. its currently in my parts car, apparently it has developed a decent oil seep somewhere. ive been adding a quart a week or so, havent had time to figure out where its getting out from tho. both 205s have not been looked at yet. both are complete from what ive seen, but no idea if they even spin yet.

Ah, I need EJ25D parts for my project. Mostly top end parts (intake, harness, injectors, etc.) and a few odds and ends. Even if it's a high mileage EJ25D, I just need external parts. Trade straight across, complete engine for complete engine.

Update: Engine has 1000mi on it and semi-synthetic 10w40 is now being used. Runs like a top and 3500rpm to redline is a fun thing to do, but only has been done twice. I have babied her ever since and have stuck top mostly taking pictures and changing radios...again.

Pics.

Everyone told me I shouldn't put 10w40 semi-synthetic in my motor. I have used it on every single one of my vehicles for the last 10 years and never once had an issue.
