Jclark
hey guys, I'm new to this forum. I'm looking for a little advice. so I picked up a 05 LGT 5MT with 125,xxx miles recently for a commuter car. it needed a little tlc. I replaced the front axles, LCA, lower ball joints, front rotors and tie rod ends. everything went pretty smooth considering. so the issue started with vibration in the steering that I attributed to bad front axles- completely no grease left and no boots so they were changed. ok so I changed everything out. My issue now is that Theres a crazy strong vibration but not coming front the steering wheel or front end. when driving at any speed I can put in neutral and its smooth as butter. when I get ont he gas at any speed/rpm its shakes. when letting the clutch out the whole car ( body) shakes especially in 1st/2nd. I threw it up on 4 jack stands and put the car in gear thinking I can see where its coming from. the trans itself is shaking. now this happens in any gear, not rpm dependent and when in neutral it I still felt but less. I checked all moutns, engine and trans and none of them have any rips and are still good. my concern is did I mess something royally up inside the trans when doing the axles? RustyRuu
What was the carrier bearing doing during all this does it have a lot of play?
Max Capacity
Grab the shaft's of the propeller shaft on either side of the carrier bearing and see if they are easy to move, they should be fairly tight. OEM shaft or a custom one piece from DDS is what's out there. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). Jclark
Yea the carrier bearing had a ton of,playboy it but not ripped or torn. Its at my mechanic now. But ill post back with the findings. I agree that the bearing is bad but with the drive removed from the ca4, I still get a vibration from the engine and,no it's not,the normal l Subaru vin. I'll post back on Monday for anyone, following this.
Max Capacity
Let us know the cost of the propeller shaft ? You can order one from the Vendors here cheaper then you can buy it from your local dealer. If you don't need the car right away, I couple of day's shipping time may save you some cash. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/propeller-shaft-my-story-246593.html 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Jclark
Hey guys.. So,for, anyone following.. This was the fix for me. So here's the update. Brought the car to my mechanic and he had no,idea what it was... He double checked all the mountd, trans engine and carrier bearing and said all were intact and fine. I was bummed but i,kept reading forums and stumbled across one that had something to,go with the length of the axle tubes and how, they aren't exact . know,i read at least 100 forums where the axle was the issue but nothing had the vibrations I was feeling or what I was seeing visually. So here I am,tonight missed and bored so I threw the old (green cup) axles back on the car .. That took about 25minutes from wheels off to wheels on ... I was mad and just wanted to be fit done.. Well that was my issue.. I compared the axles and the ( new one ) with both cups pressed in was about 1/4 in taller. From what I can gather. That was to right and it transmitted any and all vibrations, through the engine/ trans to the body of the car Thanks for everyone input .. Much appreciated. And btw. max- that input shaft I did have him look at.. He agreed it was a little much free play but the home would support that and would be a lot less. He didn't see a need to change that unless there was transmission related noises such as a bad bearing.
Max Capacity
So you replaced both front OEM axles with after market ones and then had the vibration ? Yea, after market axles are a hit or miss type thing it seems. Lots of good talk about raxles.com 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs.
