1990 legacy auto - torque binding coming back

Recommended Posts

when i first got my car 6 months ago or so, i fixed a few things and then noticed torque bind, so i replaced the solenoid, and torque bind appeared to be gone. of course i replaced some fluid in the process.

i used this thread to do the repair/replacement.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2501432&highlight=binding

but now in reverse i can feel the binding coming back.

i plan to drain and refill fluid.

what you guys think?

note that my power green light always flashes 16 flashes when i start it up.

my car only has one green plug but has both black oplugs, i should probably connect the 2 black plugs and see what codes it get, but they are historical codes, correct???

thanks

jim

Hi,

The BLACK plugs are for the ECU - not the TCU - and do show stored/historical codes. The green plugs are for active codes and used to clear the codes - if the issue's been fixed. There are two of them...probably still hidden up there somewhere.

And to find out the 16 flashes: http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/trans.html

I'd do one more drain>Fill>drive so you have done it the recommended 3 times to get the most of the fluid out. Make sure it's fully warmed up and you're in Park when checking the dipstick.

when i replaced the c duty solenoid (CDS) back months ago and refilled fluid, i must have not filled it completely full? cause i just drained 3 quarts but needed 5 quarts to get it back to full? confused.

don't know how sensitive the CDS is, but i will do one more drain (3 quarts seems to come out at plug with front of car on ramps) and one more 3 qt top off.

i tried the fed fuse today and engine ran like crap and stalled out. can't believe fwd fuse is tied to engine function, but it must be. and while in i backed car up 40 ft and went forward 40 ft and i felt some binding which typically means CDS is not right, darnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn : (

since i have code 23, i am waiting on another maf to arrive, though in meanwhile i will probably give mine a few squirts of electronic cleaner. stinks having multiple problems simultaneously.

i've looked for my second green plug but can't find it anywhere. will keep looking.

The 4EAT trans holds ~ 9.5 Qts in the trans pan AND the torque converter (TC). The TC doesn't drain (unless you remove it!) so the only way to get it out is to use a power flush (I don't recommend*) from a shop OR Drain>Fill w/new ATF>Drive. Do this 3 times to get most of the old fluid replaced w/new.

so, yeah..you were probably about 2 Qts low. Be carefull filling as the difference between the Low and Full mark is like 1/2 Qt or so.

Look for black tape on a wire loom/harness that looks 'extra'. Greenie is likely hiding under that.

*You'll get lots of disagreement, but I believe an ATF power flush may cause the internal seals to leak when done on these old 4EAT transmissions, esp. if the trans has not had regular maintenance. It happened to me on a car I bought w/unknown hisory, and I lost Reverse and spent $900 to fix it (which was cheap @ the time). If it's been flushed every 30K per the maintenance schedule it may be fine.
