I have 50cc Yamaha that is 2 stroke. Feel free to take it for a ride if you're ever in WI.

Also have a buddy selling a Banshee if you are looking for a good condition 2 stroke sport quad.

This may be dirty, but I miss the smell of Castrol in the morning. It smells like..victory. Movie and two stoke reference! Hello!

But 16,000 revs. God I miss that on my Yamaha KT100. All the power was between 14 and 16000 revs.

It's a Kendon trailer. Got it used from a guy that was getting out of racing. They are not cheap, but work really well, are really well built, last (that is an 80's model) and hold their value. Being so small they are a bitch to back up though, but easily cruises on the highway at 80-90 with full size tires. It also stows vertically and very easily; really why I got it. I had a Harbor Freight trailer before that, can't be beat for the money and works really well for what it is, but for one man it was hard to fold and stow.

I've been lucky to be able to have a decent amount of bikes throughout the years and be able to ride even more that are not mine, but that Tuono fits me so well. That engine and chassis are really something else, that it's the best bike I've ever ridden. It's not much harder to toss around than a 600cc super sport. I got the Tuono while having an '07 Speed Triple that I thought I'd never get rid of, loved that bike, but after getting the Tuono I rode the Speed Triple twice in 6 months. It made the bike seem very inferior. I still miss that Speed Triple though...

Since we are talking bikes and threads like these suck without pictures.

One of my other all time favorites is an '04-'05 ZX10R. I had an '04 for a while and mainly as a track machine. I've never had a bike scare me as much as that one, or one I've crashed as much. 9 out of 10 times I just felt like it was trying to kill me on slightest provocation, but that one out of ten time, when everything aligned just so, that bike made time stand still. On one hand I'm glad I got rid of it, on the other I still wish I had it.

Replaced the ZX10R with an '09 ZX6R. I was quicker on that bike than the '10 as it inspired so much more confidence. Really a great machine. Got rid of it as I got sick and could not do any more track days. Now that I'm better I was looking for one again, till I decided to trade my LGT for a '09 spec.B and put some money in to it...it just never ends.

An '03 ZX-6R was my first 'track only' bike... bought for the track, and only ridden ~150 miles on the street. Great bike, and like you said, confidence inspiring.

I sold it and bought an '05 GSX-R1000 after riding a friend's '01 just for grins and missing my personal lap record by .25 seconds... That 1000 was incredible, and just as easy to ride as the 600.

I rode an '07 ZX-6R at a Keith Code school... It was brand new with only 0.6 miles on the clock the first time I threw a leg over it... that one was broken in properly! ;)

Great bike, but felt slow compared to my GSXR. They also had the previous years plastics on them, which didn't fit and were touching down in every corner which was kind of a PITA.

I always wanted to ride a ZX-10, but never got 'round to it. Kawi's power delivery is usually much more 'interesting' than Suzuki's...

Very nice. I loved the 636's. If you have a chance to ride the '09+ ZX6R it will pleasantly surprise you. I had a chance to ride the '08 for a few hundred miles and did not care for it at all. '09s dropped more than 20 lbs and picked up power everywhere., especially in the midrange. It's very reminiscent of the 636 motor. Those big piston forks with the chassis changes work really well too.

  • 1 month later...
  • 2 weeks later...

Twist, Twist II and Soft Science are all great resources for a rider of any experience level. I've read them all and been to 'School' three times. My riding both on street and track definitely benefited... Anyone who's serious about building their skills should read the books (at least), and try to get to a track based school.

Edit... because I didn't look at my last post... :p

Losing your short term memory is a bitch!

Going to look at new street bikes this weekend. Hoping to spend 8-9k or less on a new bike. Going to see what kind of deals the local dealers have going on. My street bikes have been 3 600cc CBRs and a KLR650 enduro. And 2 dirt bikes but obviously not on the street. CRF450 and CRF250. Not quite sure what I want going forward. Don't think I want a RR bike like my last CBR. I mostly cruise around but I do want something that feels good on power. The KLR is at the opposite end of the spectrum from my CBRs with its whooping 38 crank hp. Not a great freeway bike.

I saw a never sold 2016 CB1000R listed for 8994 at a dealer I am interested in. Some cruisers can be had for that price in the 900cc range. Also saw a never sold 2015 thruxton 900 for 7499. And a 2014 with 600 miles on it thruxton 1200 for 7995. I have some thinking to do.... and hopefully some test riding to do.

One of my friends is looking to get into motorcycles. She is 5'2" so a lot of bikes won't fit her. Any suggestions for a beginner bike for midgets??

I think the best beginner bike is the Kawasaki Ninja 500R/EX500(go figure... that's the only bike I've owned). It's tame but still has plenty of power to be fun (at least at lower-ish speeds). Plus it's cheap and real easy to wrench on. Good online support/community too. The 250 is a pretty solid starter bike too.

That said, if the height thing is really an issue, something cheap like a Honda Nighthawk 250 or some other cheap cruiser is probably a better bet.

Bikes can be lowered but I usually find they feel different when lowered. One of my F4Is was lowered when I bought it and it felt different when leaning over.... until I put the stock length link back on. Also rode lowered R6s that felt different than standard. None of these bikes were hard to control... just felt more confident at stock ride height.

This is what I learned on.

And moved on to this, but they are rare, but low seat height.

For a bigger sportbike once she learns, these are low and easy to trim the seat, otherwise a small cruiser

Buell blast is a good learners bike. You can get 2004-2010 models for less than 2 grand, and the early 2000s for 1500 or less in good shape. Which often means more reliability when compared to a nice condition 70s-90s bike. Don't want to spend too much on a first bike incase of user error causing damage or if they find out riding isn't for them. Edited by 05GT Guru

Well I took a close look this weekend and right now I am down to the Kawi Z800 or the Yamaha FZ09. Both are naked street fighters, similar in power. If they were the same price I would probably pick the Yamaha. Seems like a better bike, in terms of riding experience. Also has riding modes. A- aggressive, b- bullshit, and standard. A is no assists all power, aggressive throttle mapping. B - is the slowest most dumbed down mode, lag in response, seems like less power, all assists on and working. Standard is full power, slightly less aggressive throttle, traction/wheelie control on. The kawi is just a bike with normal controls but all the z800s do have ABS. I do like the gauges on the z800 better than the fz09. More info and a better layout IMO. Plus I had a hard time seeing the rpms on the FZ09 when I was at lower rpms but I think it's just because I'm so tall and the angle needs to be adjusted. I have had inline 4 bikes like the kawi... I do like the triple the Yamaha has. Both have trq at lower rpms than a sportbike because of gearing but it seems like the 847cc triple from Yamaha is just beastly at mid range rpms.... the z800 is nice too but I do like that yami triple cylinder.... I think more so than another inline 4. I also have to ask myself do I want a bike with different modes and other electrical settings??? I can totally see myself playing with the modes too often or cracking the throttle and going wait... I need to switch modes. Might be more annoying than useful.

They both have a similar msrp and the 2017s are pretty much the same price. What makes this somewhat difficult is a local dealer has 2016 z800s for 6350 brand spanking new. Which is cheap, can't find any other midsize class street fighter for that price anywhere. The 2016 FZ09 is 7800... 1500 dollars more. Which really isn't a killer and is still in my price range but for 6350 that kawi z800 is a steal. There are dirt bikes that cost more.

Have you looked at the XSR900?

It's essentially a retro styled FZ09, but has the ABS and two mode traction control.

My FJ-09 has the A/B/Std modes, and most (99.998%) of the time I ride in A. I found B useful in heavy rain with the stock Dunlop 222s (which really sucked), but rarely use Std, unless I forget to switch to A (default at startup is Std).

They have a 2017 XSR900 at the Yamaha dealer but it is 500 dollars more than the 2017 FZ09 and I prefer the look of the FZ09. ABS I am interested in though as I have never owned a bike with ABS. It's not an absolute must though. I have also never owned a bike with modes either.

Yea, I believe B mode is for rain or slick surfaces. Good call.

The FJ and FZ have the same 847cc triple.... correct? How do you like it? Any complaints? What year is your FJ, nvm I see it in your sig?

Absolutely LOVE the bike. The best all 'rounder I've ever owned, and I've owned a LOT of bikes. Light, handles like a sportbike, is fast enough on the street, and is comfortable and capable for long trips. I looked at the FZ pretty hard, and went for the FJ based on the bigger fairing and hard luggage. Other than that, they're pretty much the same bike.

The motor in these things is an absolute blast. Great torque down low, and still a good top end rush. It still makes me laugh every time I ride it. My previous bike was a 'Busa, and I think my FJ would kill it on a top gear roll from 60-100. It doesn't have the top end of a supersport, but real world power is a thing.

My only complaint is the suspension could be better, but that's the price point speaking, and there's lots of aftermarket options now. Honestly, replacing the sh*t stock Dunlops with PR4s cured a lot of my complaints about feel.

That and Yamaha didn't put the cruise control on it that's stock on the FJR and Tenere... irritating.

That's it.

Well, you're making me want to spend that extra 1500 for the FZ over the Z800.

The motor does seem great. I have heard some complaints about an engine cover sticking out too far on one of the sides and getting hot. Ever had any issues with that? I might be getting nit picky but I have never bought a new bike before.

I've not heard of that, noticed it, nor seen it discussed on ADV rider or the FJ09 forum...?

The only thing some guys bitch about is the oil drain plug being vulnerable to damage, but that's only because they try to use it like a dirt bike.

Yamaha dealers usually offer demos... you should be able to find one to ride.
