Pic sizing, due to the new server setup has recently increased from 500kb (3200x2400) to 7.63MB (6400 x 6400)

What error are you getting?

It only says "Upload of file failed."

If you'd like I can fool around with it a bit and try to figure out which file sizes it likes/doesn't like.

Surface plate as in a large flat surface?

Panes of glass seem to be decent for that sometimes, maybe a scrap of granite / quartz from somewhere?

Yep, a comparable substitute for a real surface plate. There's a mom and pop granite countertop store near my house that I'll check out if my Fakebook post returns no leads. I'll use it to deck my heads and measure the before/after thickness to know how much I removed.

I've seen these used for DIY head surface machining with sandpaper attached to it. The how-to on Nasalock mentions plate glass, or perhaps thick lexan or plexi plate. Edited by SBT

Last night I got an 11" x 23" granite cutting board from my in-laws. It's only about an inch thick, but it should work well enough for the light-duty stuff I'm doing.

A guy I work with has a Co23 valve spring tool that he was going to let me borrow, but I'm ready for it now, and he needs it for another week or so. Harbor Freight cheap-o here I come.

I get off work at 1pm today, my wife has the kids at their cousin's house, and it's just me and the car all night. I'm talkin' swamp sweaty.

Maybe the misfire codes were just a bug in BtSsm? ;);););)

I have an idea.

Before you go tearing down those heads (and you really don't need to do this until you get to the bottom end of the SB -- you will have plenty of time to deal with the heads while you are working on that) tip them on their sides, and upside down. Pour something light (diesel, paint thinner, whatever you have handy) into the exhaust ports and see what happens at the valves. It should leak out slowly, through the seals and past the valves themselves, into the combustion chamber, but what you are looking for is something unusual with Cyl 2. If it escapes real quick from there, something is up. If there is crack, you may even find it as the oil wets its way through.

It probably makes sense to wait until you tear down the case and inspect pistons before you do this. If there is an obvious problem down there, then you have your answer. Otherwise, it might be handy to not have torn down the heads just yet.

Good suggestion, I'll definitely do that.

How to I get this oil hardline off? Bottom rear of passenger side head. It looks like it should pop right out, but it wont. And yes the bolt is out :)

I KNOW you shouldn't remove it. If you damage it, not available without buying a new head! Leave it in place.

I know this because I bought a used head where the PO had pulled it out for some reason and damaged the pipe. Tried to source a new one but in the end, had to swap mine over. Major pain.

I haven't taken it out yet so I'll hold off on it for now. In theory you probably could just tap the hole to add a fitting and then use normal oil-tolerant hose instead of the 3" hard tube thing..

Oh yeah, pistons are out.

If you're coming from the first page looking for pics, congrats, you made it here safely.

At this poit I'm not sure which side is actually the front, so I oriented them to each other based on the carbon build-up on their faces. If I can figure out their correct orientation post-cleaning I'll reorder these pics correctly.

Pistons were rotated 90 degrees clockwise after each photo.

Piston 1: top, side 0, side 270, side 180, side 90.

Piston 2: top, side 0, side 270, side 180, side 90.

Piston 3: top, side 0, side 270, side 180, side 90.

Piston 4: top, side 0, side 270, side 180, side 90.

If I can figure out how to get larger pics to upload I'll combine each piston's five-views into one single pic (per piston). It seems like the site's just wanting to be funky right now.

Look, do ya see how dedicated I am to getting this stuff done? My 1.75 yo has some serious sinus congestion and just caaaaan't seem to sleep any other way tonight. You should see his eyes. They're all puffy and booger'd up... kinda like mine will be when I wake up in 5 hours to clean the pistons before everyone else wakes up. When one gets unhealthy they all seem to follow suit, so tomorrow could be disastrous.

Don't forget to notice how well I made the picture look like someone else took it and I'm not just sitting at the kitchen table by myself at midnight browsing a car forum on my laptop that's surrounded by car parts.

My wife would kill me if she ever found this website.

great pic :)

So aside from normal wear and grime, no chunks falling off?

Another possibility is rod or main bearings. Are any down to copper?

EDIT: please disregard, a bad bearing would cause false knock, but not misfires

Deposits on piston tops looks on the heavy side of normal. The flushing action on the piston edge could indicate poor oil control. Check for free movement of the oil rings.

Skirts look pretty worn. Not sure what that streaking on the skirts under the oil return ports is about. Is it possible this engine was run with a lot of dirty oil at some point?

There is a dimple on each piston top. The dimple faces front on assembly. They are not showing in the photos, but you should be able to find the dots. That will tell you the orientation.

I wouldn't completely rule out ring land issues until you pull the rings and clean things up a bit. Sometimes the cracks are sneaky.

let em soak overnight. mine went from this to this

True enough, but save that for after the forensics. At this point, there is still no obvious reason for the OP's misfire. The plan is to use new OEM pistons anyway, as I understand it.

Just saw your pictures of the internals uploaded in the first page. Everything looks good (and normal) with the bearings and presumably the crank as far as we can see from the pictures.

Congratulations, you got everything broken down in record time!

I asked about the oil and streaks in my previous post because I didn't see that in my first teardown of a relatively well cared for SB, but I saw lots of it in my 180K engine that had a couple of years of poor oil change history. It was also burning a LOT of oil and all the piston tops had the telltale signs of oil wash around the edges. You didn't mention anything about oil consumption -- was that also a problem?
