Quick update. I've run through a couple of tanks of higher octane fuel and rerun the 0-100 times, however there was virtually no difference. I then spoke to my tuner and he said that because it was dyno tuned running 91 there wasn't any additional timing available for getting gains from higher octane fuel. So although safe, there's no power gains to be had from running 95 or 98 at the moment.

Next time Matt/Throttle Happy is in town I'll get an updated file with a small amount of timing advance which will give me some power gains on 95 octane fuel which is what I run most of the time (wherever it is available).

Also went back to the exhaust shop and had a larger resonator fitted which has quietened it down a lot without impacting on the performance. Happy days :icon_mrgr

Here's a couple of shots of the larger oval resonator and hotdog which was installed this week. It's cut out a lot of the boom and quietened it up while still allowing a free flow.

I've been debating adding a second exhaust to my 2.5. Is it necessary to get a tune done afterwards when doing so?

No tune required for any exhaust work after the cats. Just don't increase the exhaust tubing diameter, keep it stock size to preserve your low end torque.

+1 what GTEASER said. I originally had a Y-pipe and second exit fabricated with no change to the tune and it ran 100% fine.

If you go changing the headers and mid-pipe then you'll need to get a tune to make the performance gain and get rid of the fault code that this will throw.

Just changing rear mufflers behind the back axle has minimal effect on the exhaust flows from the engine.

Time to paint the brake calipers. Cleaned them up yesterday and painting today. Work currently in progress...

And just so as not to keep you waiting in suspense too long here's the first coat of colour...

I thought of going yellow or orange but hey I'm driving a 2.5 so black it is :)

Had just enough paint to do the rears as well.

Also rotated the tyres while I was at it.

Fronts are boxed up waiting for new rotors, pads and braided lines...

New STI gear shifter installed and working!

Thanks Grnlantern... Sorry it didn't fit the US spec Legacy but it does look really nice in the Aus spec Liberty. Actually the leather on the shifter matches the boot/cover a lot better than the stock gear shifter.

  • 1 month later...

Well I've been having a love/hate relationship with my car for the past couple of months. Haven't posted an update for a while so I thought I'd give a quick recap of activities.

Took my car in for the Electronic Park Brake recall and got a free wash + vacuum :)

Have been lugging a fair bit of gear around for work and thought the car wasn't as quick. Did a timed run out on a flat section of road and ran 9.0sec for the 0-100 (a full second slower) so figured it must have been the full tank of fuel and 100kg of gear that I was lugging around in the boot.

Had a tweak of the tune done for 95 octane fuel, re-ran the car on the dyno and redid my 0-100km/hr (0-62mph) times.... only for the results to be worse than before. That was after emptying the car of all excess items and running the tank down to 1/4 full. Power was down on the dyno and 0-100 was worse by 0.6 sec (went up from 8.0 to 8.6 sec).

So the last week or 2 there has been a lot of head scratching going on. However I then realized that when I'd taken my car back in for recall on the electronic park brake, the service guys at the dealership must have connected my car up to the computer and overwritten the tune in my car.

Anyway so now I'm going to get the tune file rewritten and reflashed to my car and then rerun the tests.

And I won't be taking the car back to the dealer any time soon either as I'd specifically asked the dealership if the update they were doing for the electronic park brake was going to effect the ECU software for the engine tune...and they'd said definitely not :spin:

Well after reflashing my car back to a known good tune I was still down on power. So next step was to reset the fuzzy logic in the CVT transmission.

There's a specific procedure to get the CVT to "forget" it's learned settings. So after running through this procedure I went and re-ran my 0-100's and wow I picked back up the 0.6sec that I'd "lost".

I'll post up in a separate thread a "how to" but we now suspect that the power was down since the dyno tune earlier in the year when I'd run a tank of 91 octane fuel.

Life is good again having full power/torque back :)

Do you know by chance if STI fixed calipers will fit on a 2.5 or 3.6 rotor? I'm only curious because I'm not a big fan of the floating caliper look on our cars and I like the look of the fixed calipers. I would assume the 2.5 rotors would be too small.

Usually these will bolt on. You will have to upgrade the rotors if its anything like Australia spec Liberty. The 2.5 gets a 294mm rotor and the 3.6R gets the 316mm rotors (same as WRX).

I'm changing the rotors, pads and calipers to match up with the 3.6R. Again you'll need to do your research for the US spec Legacy in case it is different, however the brakes off older gen4 and gen5 GT and 3.0/3.6 will bolt up identical to gen6 (on the fronts at least without the electronic park brake).

The rear rotors are the same on my 2.5i as the 3.6R (both run 300mm rear rotors) so there's no point in changing these.

The bigger upgrade is to go for the STI Brembo kit (326mm front, 316mm rear rotors), but then you have to start worrying about brake clearance with the wheels that you're running also.
