"Burning" stink, but not all the time

Recommended Posts

2005 LGT Wagon. I get a bad smell like oil or grease is burning, but not all the time. It will show up then disappear. I've checked the axle boots and there are no tears from which grease could escape. The bottom of the car is dry and there are no oils spots on the driveway. At first I'm thinking valve cover gaskets, but I see no evidence of oil and some of it should go right to the ground. The oil level stays good, with no loss in 1000 miles.

What are the chances that oil or grease leaks would go right to the manifold or exhaust and burn completely?

I did change the oil and filter just before this experience. Having done the change in the dark I fumbled the filter and some oil could have spilled onto the belly pan. Any ideas on flushing the oil and gunk off the belly pan?

Any other suggestions on places to check?

If you don't get the filter completely tight a little oil can leak and drip off the filter onto the header. I have had this happen 2x, once on the Legacy, once on the Fozz. Reach under there and give it another 1/4 turn and you'll be good.

Another thought, how long do you normally drive the car ?

If you only drive short distances the engine never gets hot enough the bake all the stuff off. Then one day you take a long drive...and you smell things.

The last few times I've driven for an hour to an hour and a half. The filter is pretty snug. I'm going to look at the power steering pump today. I still have over a thousand in unused subybucks. Maybe I'll take the car in for new valve cover gaskets and ask them to gap the valves at the same time. It'll stay overnight I presume? A job done cold?
