Headlight options

Recommended Posts

Cliff notes: I think I need to buy a new headlight and seek advice on alternatives to the stock lights.

Full details: My driver's side low beam burned out in Denver. Not wanting to drive back to Albuquerque without one light, I tried to change the bulb in a very cold parking lot. While reaching in through the wheel well to remove the burned out bulb from the retaining spring, I (am pretty sure I) broke the plastic that holds the closed spring in place. The old bulb came out, but the retaining spring will not close to hold a new one in place. Unless I want to drive around with a bulb held in place with a plastic tie, it looks like my only option is to replace the whole headlight. Rather than "waste" money on another ugly stock light, I am thinking of using this "opportunity" to upgrade to more attractive lights. . . perhaps the black 13-14 lights or U-bar style lights. I am looking for advice from anyone that has replaced their stock lights.

Specific questions: What looks good (pics, please) and what fits well? Has anyone had problems with fit or moisture with an aftermarket light? Is OEM worth the premium I would have to pay over an alternative like TYC? Finally, does anyone have black OEM 13-14 lights they want to part with?

Thanks.

I had Anzos and liked the look. They also dropped right in so that was a plus. However, they aren't cheap. If you're a little adventurous and have a big enough oven or a heat gun, you can do some neat stuff to your stockers.

Anzos on left and a little home project on the right:

Jakal8788, both of those look amazing.

Did the Anzos draw attention? One of the things I love about the LGT is its sleeper status.

I broke my light just trying to change the bulb. I can try to blame the cold for making them brittle and Subaru for leaving no space behind the lights for me to see what I was doing, but I blame myself enough to know that I'm not ready to customize lights.

Thank you!

In my opinion, I don't think they drew any undue attention. I never had any issues when they were in my car and I think they generally fall in line with what is seen with Audi.

I personally wanted to do the blackout headlight project myself just so I could add halos and customize more to my liking.

I was trying to ask whether Subaru offers two OEM options for black headlights. It appears to me that the Special Appearance package just used regular 13-14 Legacy lights for the Outback. Is that right?

The special appearance lights are a direct fit for the legacy.

Half the price of ANZO's, same quality as they are sister company's.

EAGLE EYES

Did you notice any vibration of the projector light as it reflects when you stop behind another car? I only ask this as a few years back when I had an Audi I changed the headlights and for some reason I guess the projectors were not made well and the projector would vibrate.

The Eagle Eyes are rock solid. I will probably be opening them up and retro fitting them after my oem project. No issues at all with vibration. A very good inexpensive option for us if you like the U Bar look. They do need HID's though as the halogen looks out of place with the led's, IMHO.

Do the amber reflectors light up on the sides like the stock assemblies?

My anzos that I got from Protuning have HID's. I would not recommend the company as the service is horrible if you have any problems but they seem to be the only ones that carry it. I am contemplating taking mine apart in the future and doing a retrofit with the retro-quick legacy projectors.

Are there any headlight options with HID projectors already built in?

These are literally plug and play, no mods necessary and same bulb as stock. Been holding up great for me but will be replacing soon with my stockers that I have just retrofitted with some goodies.

If I were to do it again I would open up the eagle eyes and retrofit them before installing in car.
