inerax
Hello everyone. My wifes car turned from a nice, quiet family car to a very loud car almost over night. I thought that it would be a gasket and investigated. Found that the noise was coming from the heat shield(s) directly under the motor. I cut off the heat shields just to find one solid piece, no gaskets. Is there anything else I can check to find the loud noise? I checked gaskets where manifold connects to mid pipe and the engine gaskets, both seemed fine. If I need to replace the manifold, where can I find one for a decent price? OEM or aftermarket is fine. Thanks guys!
Pazuzu
A decade ago when I used to smoke I used a burning cigarette a couple times to find leaking exhaust. I always figured if I needed to again I would use an incense stick. Usually I can easily find leaks though by just sound and feel. If your manifold is leaking an exhaust shop might be able to weld it on the car, or you could takei it off and bring it to a good welder.
JmP6889928
Wet your hands and feel around the entire manifold and if there is a leak, you'll immediately feel it. Usually, the leak is at the manifold to up pipe flange. It's most likely overtightened and that causes the stupid 2 bolt flange to leak after a while. Wet hands, start the car, feel around. You'll find it. As far as a new exhaust manifold goes, look in the FS section. You can find one usually for a good price. New gaskets and you'll be good to go. Would I need to weld this shut or would some other solution work? I have used JB weld for many applications but nothing like this. It does say it would work but I have a feeling it wont last long. I found some ebay manifolds for $300. Do you think this would be a good solution? Or just wait for a stock, used manifold?

The ebay manifolds will eventually crack and start leaking again or they might not even mate up right and leak for the get-go. Fixing your current one or getting a used stock manifold is the way to go. My OBXT build
SteveM
Not sure if they will ship, but F&S will probably have a manifold on hand. They are a Subaru-only junkyard in Roxbury, CT. Phone is (860)355-9981. Got a diff from them for less that it would have cost to rebuild mine. Steve
