update tires and brakes

Recommended Posts

Thanks to everyone for their assistance between my other two posts and the private messages I have received.

I have decided to go with the Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring for tires. After several days of research between Michelin, Cooper, Pirelli, and Continental, I think the CS5's will suit me very well for my demands of an all season performer. Just gotten to busted up and down to get back into swapping between two sets.

As for brakes/rotors, I ordered the DBA T3 Clubspec 4000 series with Hawk ceramics. I KNOW I KNOW, even the guy at KNS tried to talk me in to the HPS 5.0's. I can always change out pads if these don't suit my needs, and y'all can tell me "we told you so"

I also ordered a set of Centric premium rotors and Centric posi quiet ceramic for the '04 Outback I bought for my daughter. Hoping to get her car up to the stereo shop to get her a new stereo set up since only one speaker works.

thanks again

david

What's your experience with Cooper so far? Do you like it?

Lurker, I freakin love them!!! I am an aggressive driver, I just have more fun than most, lol. Only way I could change my mind is once I start replacing the crappy sway bars and suspension. It was a HUGE difference going from the tires it had on it to the coopers. About the only way I can think to describe it is old tires lagged on input, NOT with the coopers at all. First time I went to pass a car it showed me all to well of how much the rear sway bar is to small for these cars for spirited driving.

I'm trying to sell mine, so I doubt I will get to report on sway bar and suspension upgrades. If I do I will report back.

Thanks for the feedback! Decided to buy cooper cs5 too. Waiting for delivery.

Will be interested in hearing your opinion on them. Just get ready to enjoy your Legacy a little more, or they came from the factory with a really crappy tire for my area. Like I mentioned earlier, the response between tire and road on first pass was most noticeable at first.

Last time I checked (back in March) I had about 6mm front and 8mm rear on my brake pads. Well lately it's been feeling like the pedal is getting closer to the floor and she still stops plenty but becoming less responsive.

What's a good pad/rotor combination that's not overkill for daily driving? I hate asking this because I'll hear 15 different responses but hoping to hear a couple of the same and going that route. I have no plans to track my car. I should note that I enjoy some spirited driving though ;)

Edit: These DBA T3 4000 series don't look badly priced though.

Subbing for response to this. Recently developed a long squeal on my passenger side brakes so will be looking into the same thing soon, and wouldn't mind a bit of an upgrade on the rotors while I'm in there.

When I got my car, it had 42k on the Odometer. I had no idea what pads n rotors were used (if they were original) so when the car needed new pads at 70k I said screw it and replaced them all. 30k later and the car stops much better then when I got her and there has been almost no reduction in pad material.

When it doubt change them out!

FWIW, it looks like these front rotors are on clearance at KNS brakes.... $65 a piece. Wow.

I called, Ken I think, at KNS brake and he gave me a helluva package deal for thhe DBA's and Hawk pads for mine, and centric set up for my daughters outback. The day I test drove her's, I was walking around the lot and found my beauty. I shouldn't have sat in it, much less test drove it. I don't get along in too many cars, but man these Leg's are comfy

Is there any difference in the T2 and the T3 other than the thermal paint? I couldn't find any except for a few more slots in the rotors. Price difference for the combo for the two is $175. Also, HPS 5.0 or Ceramic? I might be needing to do this sooner than I wanted, lol.

I am curious as well. Failed inspection cause of brakes, so I need to order and fix ASAP. I was going to go with the T3/HPS5.0's but  that price difference! With 0 tracking and some spirited driving at times, I don't know if it's worth the extra $184?

I spoke to Ken before I ordered, told how I drove etc....and that was what he recommended to me. The ceramic is far less dust over the 5.0's Give him a call tell him I sent you, he gave me a better deal than online price

can someone tell me how to tag you folks instead of only qouting one person, or is this forum not set up to do that??

I looked on the site, the ceramic are ultra low dust

HPS

best thing I can say is click on the read more tabs for the rotors and the pads to see if the cost difference is worth it for how you drive. These rotors are impressive and damn heavy. Higher quality steel, more steel, going to give you far more control than a rotor of lesser material. Bottom line is going to depend on how you drive, and what you want to do

I'm not sure if there's a way to tag people the way you're thinking of, but you can click the "m quote" (m is for "multi") button on each post you want to quote, then click the "quote" button, and it'll automatically string together all of those posts in your reply in the order you selected them.
