Is anyone familiar with Broken Boxer Repairs

I am wondering if anyone has used Broken Boxer Repairs in Bath , NY. I am thinking about giving them a shout to get new heads for my legacy. They have a very fair price on their website...$500 for the pair vs $750 each from the dealer. Can't find too much in the way of reviews so I figured I'd ask here. Thanks!

Was wondering the same after confirming yesterday that the LGT I just purchased has a spun bearing. I was online looking for options and stumbled across their Facebook page which gave me warm fuzzies - lots of engine porn and they're only 2-3hrs from me.

FWIW I also spoke with them yesterday and they seem legit and quite experienced... ended up having a 1/2 conversation with Matt (the owner from what I gather) and he answered most of my questions before I even asked them and touched on all the big ticket items that I 've researched so far.

I came away feeling like I have some real options at least.

Sounds like I'm giving them a plug but I honestly didn't even know about them until yesterday.

My post count is low because I only got my first ever Subaru 3 days ago - and now here I am with so many others wondering why the hell I bought one. Seems this Japanese engineered motor is a sweet little puppy to begin with but quickly turns into a real dog at a young age.

At this point I'm wishing I'd stuck with Nissan :spin::mad:

Well, I contacted them and have started an exchange through email. Depending on what they'll get me for in a core charge since mine aren't rebuildable, I may give them a shot. It would mean getting the car running much sooner. If they don't work out, I will probably leave it til spring and have some fun with it.

I wouldn't knock on the subie design too much yet. In my case, she's not that young (165k) and the miles haven't been terribly kind....spirited driving I believe its called...lol.

For anyone stumbling across this thread - I ended up moving forward with these guys for a full engine rebuild and had a very positive experience.

Based on that, I would recommend them in a heartbeat... Matt is a genuine Subaru enthusiast doing very thorough work and a legitimately nice guy.

My rebuilt engine just ticked over 1000mi and seems to be running very nicely.

Bumping this from the dead since it's high in the Google results for BBR. Sadly I had the poor experience many on Subaru forums are having, I'd recommend avoiding this company at all cost. Brief story below, longer saga at Why Broken Boxer Repair Sucks - Blog

Broken Boxer boasts about doing quality machine and assembly work and had reasonable answers to my questions before I made my purchase. They were a bit cheaper than IAG, I'd get a set of refreshed heads, seemed like it was worth trying a smaller shop. So I paid over $4200 for a "stage 1 longblock" that had issues from day one, impossible to get the owner or anyone with knowledge on the phone after they had my money. Engine leaked from numerous seals (front main seal, passenger cam shaft, both valve covers), sounded like a tractor all the time, blew Spy Hunter sized clouds of oil smoke at random startups, had miserable leakdown in cylinder #4. Thing was a dud, I spent a lot of time and money chasing down issues trying to make it work before giving up and pulling it out. Sent shortblock to BBR, they have gone silent and still have my block.

I had a quality machine shop inspect the heads, it's pretty clear the heads were not rebuilt, combustion chamber work was some of the worst they'd seen (likely done by hand with a Dremel). Pistons had significant wear on the skirts after 8k miles due to sloppy fit, exhaust valves seats worn to the point that they leaked. Empty promises, lies about shipping, poor craftsmanship, complete lack of communication, avoid this company. I'm sure there are some people who had good luck with BBR, my experience shows they do not stand behind their work and have no intention of owning up to their mistakes. I've since paid for an IAG block and haven't had a single issue, I wish I had done this in the first place.

Oh wow, I completely forgot about this thread. Since it got bumped, I'll give an update. Buying from them was a poor decision. The process became very dragged out. It took 3 shipping attempts before they got the right set of heads to me. Once installed, the heads leaked like a sieve. Cam repair sleeves took care of the majority of issues but the heads did continue to have small leaks. Motor was consuming a lot of oil. However I cannot say whether it was rings or the valves. Since the body was starting to rust pretty bad, I never bothered to tear back into the motor.
