caspjack
Hello everyone, Looking for an answer that no mechanic can seem to solve. My 1995 Subaru Liberty Wagon has a random problem where it won't start. This happens after I've been driving it for a bit and then stop and then go to start it again and the ignition turns over but doesn't actually start. Has anyone had this problem before and have any idea what it is? Thanks in advance, Jackson
Rideredmx38
Sounds like the crank position sensor or coil pack. Can u hear the fuel pump turn on? Maybe also If it has a factory alarm next time it won't start take the key out and lock it and unlock it a couple times
caspjack
Yeah I think I can hear the fuel pump turn on but can't be 100%. The car only does it when the engine is still warm if that means anything. Did it this morning after driving 40kms and turning it off and then I left it for 5 hours and went out before and it started fine like nothing is wrong with it at all. Cheers
Rideredmx38
Yup sounds like the classic crank sensor or cam sensor fault. Start there first
caspjack
Alright thank you I'll check it out. Do you have any advice or links to sort this out?
twisty
my 96 did this, was annoying as hell. cam sensor switched with my 95 and the problem moved with it. so, i picked one up at a pick n pull and tossed the bad one out.
Rideredmx38
Alright thank you I'll check it out. Do you have any advice or links to sort this out? Well first I'd get your self a Haynes repair manual very good to have. But as far as testing them I don't no how you do that the only way I no is to swap them with another Subaru if u can, if not then just replace them. Very simple 2 do. caspjack
Mechanic thinks that the crank and cam will either work or not work so he doesn't think that is it. Could it be the coolant temp sensor?
monkeyposeur
It's a longshot but it could be your problem.
twisty
when my cam sensor went out in the GT it was very sporadic and seemingly random. it would die at a light and not start for 5 minutes, then the next morning it would not start at all. wait 20 or so minutes, mess with the wiring (red herring, im sure) and it would start up and run for 2 days straight without an issue. i traded the sensor out with the L wagon and the problem followed, the GT stopped having start issues. as for the ECT, i dont think it will keep anything from starting, just how it will run once it is started. i ran my outback for over an hour last night with the ECT disconnected to see if it would do its stumble and/ or die thing, but without it the car ran fine. johnegg
if the car starts when cold, first thing in the morning, but does not start when warm, i would bet on the temp sensor. if you have starting problems when both warm and cold, then maybe cam ot crank sensor. and yes, those two can be intermittent. twisty
i was having an intermittent issue with my GT sputtering out and not starting on crank sensor, found out that when i replaced the sensor with the one off the extra motor i had, either the bolt was different length or the sensor is a different height because the sensor was rattling around loose after i tightened it down. once i got that sucker immobile i havent had an issue at all.
