2005 LGT build thread - xAgyex

On July 27th, I purchased this 2005 Subaru Legacy GT.

I think the Legacy GT is the perfect all around vehicle. I have owned lots of cars (S2000, Rx8) and well I think it was time to move to a more practice car for my family.

Hopefully this one will be a winter trooper and take us snowboarding.

2005 LGT 2.5 Turbo Regal Blue

145,966 Miles

Timing Belt/ Water Pump completed 30k miles ago

Clutch completed at 125k miles

Rear wheel bearings were the only other things that ever failed and were replaced.

Well maintained

Selling my beloved 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon Ltd. 5-speed. I've owned it from new and it has been my daily driver. Always fully stock, never modded. Never in an accident. No smokers, no pets. Everything works.

This is the car we bought when we had our first (and as it turns out only) child, and it has been a great car to be both practical and fun. Only reason for selling is we've owned it a decade and it's time to get something new (the Volvo V60 is already in the stable).

Mechanically, the car is sound. No turbo failure, no throwout bearing failure. Both rear bearings replaced under warranty. Clutch replaced over a year ago. New rear brakes this spring. Newer Conti DWS tires with lots of life left. I have most records and can detail further repairs put in recently (wife didn't realize for a couple of years that I was giving her the oil change records to file, not to throw out -- that said, it never went more than 5k without an oil change).

Cosmetically, I would call it good to very good. Paint is glossy and cleans up nicely, but has scratches and chips consistent with its age and use. No major dents, but lots of door dings (apparently nobody in NoVa can open a door in a parking lot without hitting the neighboring car) so it could use some PDR love. One flaw warrants mention: an improperly mounted rear bike rack cracked the plastic panel just below the rear hatch glass; this happened seven years ago and has never caused trouble (see picture). One rear door handle was recently replaced after breaking in an ice storm; it's unpainted black, but very hard to see against the dark blue. All wheels are curbed, but they pass the ten-foot test.

Interior is in very good shape, with appropriate wear for its age and use. Stereo, CD changer, heated seats, lights -- everything works. Leather has no tears; dashboard has no cracks. Grey headliner has mild stain from leaving the sunroof open in a storm once. The backs of the seats are scuffed from my daughter and her friends kicking the plastic seatbacks, and the rear cupholders were long ago kicked to pieces. All-season floor mats.

The car comes with factory crossbars (not pictured), a set of unused carpeted floor mats, and a Jabra bluetooth in-car speakerphone. Aftermarket alloy wheels with Continental Extreme Winter tires (205/50-17) near the end of their useful life are also available.

Prefer local sale. Asking $9,000 or best reasonable offer.

So today today the SS-Subi pass her inspection with flying colors...ok not so flying colors...I think the previous owner used 87 and so it was shutting off on me a lot with bad idle...but the inspector was able to drive it still so he passed me. So after pickup I filled her up for the first time with 91, picked up Castro 5w 30 and K&N oil filter and completed the first oil change.

**As a bonus, since bad idle can happen because of Mass Airflow Sensor, I clean it with some electrical cleaner**

Parts:

Castro Edge 5w30 (Manual calls for Upper level 4.2 US qt)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61t2LiRf-2L._SY355_.jpg

K&N HP1010 (I know, I know should be HP1008 like Rx8, but the HP1010 is longer and holds more oil so figured I try it)

http://b.cdnbrm.com/images/products/large/air_intake_systems/kn_vehicle_specific/kn_HP-1010.jpg

Total cost: $30

--------------------------------

DIY:

1. Remove oil fill cap

http://i.imgur.com/ok9pXwS.png

2. Jack Subi up on driver side

3. Locate under Subi, the oil drain plug 17mm, and remove it.

http://i.imgur.com/aUcu71h.png

4. Let oil drain for a while, and clean and inspect drain plug and crush washer.

5. Locate under Subi, near passenger side, the oil filter, and remove it SLOWLY.

http://i.imgur.com/SrVB8XQ.png

6. Clean up the mating surface where the oil filter use to be.

7. Apply a little bit of oil to new oil filter lip, and put a little bit of new oil into new filter, then install. Hand tighten.

8. Lower the car.

9. Add fresh oil.

10. Check level.

11. Go for a drive and call it a good day.

Oil and oil filter changed at 145981 miles

Mass Airflow Sensor cleaned at 145981 miles

Remove 2 screws, pull the plug out and spray it like hell with the electrical cleaner, reinstall, and that is literally it.

First Check Engine Light what a bummer.

I was driving with AC on high in 90 degree weather. Pull in to a shop to drop off the used oil from my oil change yesterday. Came back to car and Check Engine Light was on and Cruise Control green light was also blinking. The car drove fine. Got home and pulled the code on my OBD2 reader...P0171 Subaru - System Too Lean Bank 1

Note: I did clean the MAF yesterday with some electrical cleaner...so...I am hopeful. Not off to a good start huh.

Plan of action:

1. Check MAF again

2. Check intake air filter

3. Check vacum lines under intercoller:::COOL VIDEO TO HELP:::

-----------------------------

Update:

1. Removed inter cooler and checked noting was lose or out of place.

2. Checked MAF sensor was clean.

http://i.imgur.com/rJvvXjnm.jpg - New filter was $20

3. Found the air intake filter was very dirty, so replaced it.

4. Erased CEL code and all has been well so far.

Theres a blue T connector under the intercooler. About 85% of the time thats the issue.

Battelready, thanks for the help...I removed the inter cooler and found no loose hoes. I double checked and made sure all was in place. Erased code, and so far so good.

Had Andrewtech Automotive in Gaithersburg, MD, have a drive today, and the team there says it seems like a solid Legacy. If I have any issues in the future they will be the guys to have a go at her.

I highly recommend them, as a local Subaru Tech in MD.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update:

The LGT is still acting strange at 2500 to 3000 RPMs, so planning to replace the spark plugs. For now not going to stress because it drives well...minus bad tires or something that makes it vibrate at high speeds.

I have to say I am disappointed in this car.

After less than 1 month (at 146,907 miles) of ownership I have my second CEL P0302 -Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected.

Since I don't know when the spark plugs were last changed, I went ahead and decided to get that done today.

Driver side front plug - Gap 0.037

Tight spaces...took me about 3 hours to do this and I think I am a gear head

http://i.imgur.com/szmyQCkm.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/zlSGBZsm.jpg

Also replaced cabin air filter...found that the previous owner did not even have a cabin air filter in there...oye

Got a new one from [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0010DZZVK?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00]Amazon [/ame] for under $13

I also fix the weird noise under my dashboard. My vent changer was getting stuck and clicking. It was annoying me a lot, so when i was changing the cabin air filter, I decided to pull out the vent module and regrease it and it fixed the issue. But wow what a pain to get it out of the car. I used this link to help me.

FINAL CONCLUSION ABOUT SUBARU LEGACY...NOT MY FAVORITE VEHICLE...It will have to do as a grocery getter. Not going to invest money in modding it, just not worth it.

I have owned and work on many vehicles, and by far one of the worst to work on, the most misbehaved, and the worst designed (Partially disassemble dash to replace cabin air filter???Why?...Need baby hands to replace spark plugs???Why?). The saving grace in the car is that it is a wagon and has a roof rack. ***Just my opinion***

Previously owned and self maintained:

85 Honda Civic

90 Ford Mustang 2.3

91 Mercury Capri

91 Mazda Miata

95 Honda Civic - Fully built

00 Honda S2000

06 Mazda Rx8

Well buying a car with 150K on it not knowing how the previous owner really took care of it and possibly already having these issues and just clearing the codes while selling it before they come back is a big possibility too. Sucks it's happening but hopefully you can get to the bottom of it. But if you don't like it sell it. Sounds like you hate the car already but should have done some more homework before buying yeah?

It really can be a solid car, but again being 10+ years old and 150k on it I'm sure it's going to need some tlc. I also came from the Honda world. Turbo Subaru's easily need double the attention any of my Hondas combined needed.

I remember seeing this car for sale, seemed like a solid buy. Is the motor completely stock? Throw a DP and a tune on it and then tell us how you feel about it, lol.

I3eXa, Thanks for the support. I did my home work trust me...hahah it was between the LGT and Cayman S...lets just say the Cayman would have given me way more problems. I am just upset...It is a car, shit goes wrong, I will maintain it. My expectations were too high is all...I have no comments about the previous owners maintenance. I will monitor the situation, and if all else fails I can sell it, and be honest to who ever buys it...heck I have posted about it here.

Also, these didn't come with a cabin filter installed from the factory.

I3eXa, that is just not sanitary. Why would they do that? You have to admitt, that does not make Subaru look good in anyway...they can not spend the $15 dollars to install one? Weird.

Holla, this car is solid, even with all the stupidness at this point, it drives well and has been a great grocery getter...we shall see if it makes it to snow season, because I will be taking it to the mountains, and possibly even all the way to Vermont.

I had planned to tune it after I had sorted everything out. The plan was to do so this weekend, but I dont want to now. I will give it a week or so to see if the code comes back, then continue on this journey.

Plans:

Upgrade turbo

Tune

Plasti Dip red

Yeah it is pretty sad they skimped on the cabin filters. Also just think of all the money you are saving on ANYTHING you buy because it doesn't say Porsche :) I think the car will grow on you and definitely win your heart once snow hits. I wouldn't have any other car living in the upperleft because of the snow

Andy_Mac, that was an interesting article. I will have to figure out how to applie that fix, and all the parts, and possibly post it up on there thanks a lot man. So Andy_Mac did you do that fix for your LGT? and if so did it help?

Did you spray up in the hole on the MAF? From your description in the pics it sounds like you just sprayed the bulb.

Matt166, you may be right on the money, I did spray up a little, but I didn't focus the spray up there. I will try this tomorrow.
