cBax's OBXT build

Recommended Posts

Ive got a GS up pipe and crossover. And a Cobb DP.

Im mostly concerned with making sure I get all the little things needed for the rebuild. Oil lines, coolant lines, gaskets, seals, etc.

What gaskets are not included in this kit that I will need?

Don't waste time on the crossover. Their is a reason they discontinued selling them.

Good on the other parts. Reinforce the stock intercooler!! Get a BPV like forge and a fuel pump like the dw65c that's what BrenTuning recommends for a happy stg 2 setup.

The gasket kit looks to include everything you need. Make sure u get permatex Grey for stuff like the oil pan. Get a new oil pan. suggest killer b oil pan and pickup if you have the funds. just an oem pan and kb pickup if not. extra oil is always good. Also change the oil feed line to the turbo to a filter unit so you don't have the oem fail.

It has been known to crack and part that should have been ported is the passenger side to the up. stock uel is notorious for hot spotting 4 and burning the valve or cracking the ring land. Their is a reason all the JDM subarus run equal lengths since v7.

I suggest sending the oem mani out for ceramic coating and don't bother worrying after. the more heat control you add now the better the intercooler will work and the more power you will keep. Manifold/Up pipe/turbo hotside/downpipe add in a lava blanket and a heat shield. This will pay dividens in life of the parts since they won't rust and cool your engine bay considerably.

Also you can wrap the Oem Manifold with lava wrap and the upper half of the up pipe for more protection.

This is also how i am setup.

Spent a few hours off and on in small increments over the last week and got the motor mostly ready to be pulled. I still need to get the lower 2 bell housing nuts off, unbolt the motor mounts and separate the bell housing from the motor. Im hoping I wont have to pull the axle to get to the driver's side lower bell housing nut.

My neighbor dropped off his hoist last night and hopefully today's the day.

Shortblock, turbo and some engine parts showed up since my last post. Plan is to get the heads off the old motor this weekend and to the machine shop next week. A little intimidated by the cam sprockets. We will see how it goes.

Got the motor pulled yesterday morning. Luckily was able to get to both lower bell housing nuts without pulling an axle. Never had to jack the car up to do any of it. Used a bottle jack up against the firewall to put pressure on the block. Then a light tap on a screwdriver inserted in the crack and she popped right apart.

We then proceeded to take the new shortblock out of the box and place it on the stand.

Hmmmm. Something doesn't seem right about this new shortblock.

I was surprised that it was not wrapped in plastic when I opened the box upon arrival. Now I know why.

I will be contacting Heuberger on Monday to get this resolved. Hopefully I'm correct that this IS supposed to be a new OEM short block. http://parts.bestbuysubaru.com/p/Subaru_2005_Outback25L-TURBO-5ATXT-Limited/SHORT-BLOCK-ENGINE-ASSEMBLY/49500356/10103AC030.html

And hopefully they rectifiy the problem asap.

I then went ahead and put the old motor on the stand and pulled the oil pan to take a look.

focus is off, but its pretty obvious what the problem is.

There are a lot of other little bits scattered throughout the case.

So...next on the list:

- Get new shortblock issue resolved

- Pull apart old motor and take heads to machine shop

- Take notes of every little piece I want to replace

- Purchase: Timing set, Water pump, Killer B pickup, Motor mounts, Little things from list above

- Reassemble

- Clean, rust proof and paint engine bay.

- Reinstall

Yes. If I can get it boxed back up and into FedEx's system tomorrow, they said they'd get a new one to me by Friday.

I expect that someone returned it to them (warranty?) and they restocked it instead of sending back to Subaru. For all I know my old block filled with metal shavings is in better shape...

Just another speed bump, I suppose. My 1st turbo Subaru ownership sure has not gone smooth so far. And I feel like I'm moving forward on faith that it will be worth it in the end. 60 miles and 2 days isn't really a whole lot of time to fall in love with a car. But I'm in it so much financially that it's not worth it to turn around.

I keep telling myself that it's just because of the prior 8 years of Evo ownership.

In an attempt to temporarily forget about the shortblock woes, I decided to move onto something else. Finding that smell! The car has smelt musty ever since we got it. My wife says she wouldn't drive it. So I had to do something about it.

I found it!

http://i641.photobucket.com/albums/uu139/sti__this/OBXT/interior.jpg

The previous owners obviously were very hairy dogs that lived on a dirt road and loved raisins and kit kats. I also removed some of the padding/foam. One more wipe down and vacuum and she's good to go. No more smell. :)

The brownish residue is from a brown paint incident. There are paint specks all over the interior. Whatever didn't get cleaned up from on top of the carpet made its way down to the floor pan. Good news is that there is no rust. And a new carpet mat isn't terribly expensive. I'll put the stock seats back in initially, but eventually Id like to put something a little nicer and better fitting in it.

This is definitely the point where I sort of wish I wasn't building a family car. I already have too many race car projects!

thank you for the offer. I will let you know. Hoping to get some time tonight to work on it.

Matt,

Do you have any recommendations for machine shops in the area? Ive used RPM in Auburn in the past with no complaints. But Ive heard several bad reviews from friends and my neighbor since then.

I do. When I was considering doing more of the engine work myself I dug around and pm'd a couple of local members. One highly recommended NASCO in Saco. I talked to them and they seemed like really good guys - I ended up going with an already assembled long block though as I didn't want to mess with timing etc.

Got the old block torn down yesterday. Definitely the #2 rod bearing that gave up. About 1/16" of play.

Cam gear bolts lived up to their reputation. I don't have any specialty tools and just went into the job with some determination and the Google. Used the old timing belt and several vise grips. Intake cam gear bolts came off with a 5' breaker bar. Both of the exhaust cam gear bolts said FU and stripped out. I found one old axle nut in my collection of nuts and bolts, so I welded it onto one of the cam gear bolts and hit it with an impact, came right off. Only had one of those nuts and couldnt get it to stick to the other bolt after freeing it from the 1st one. I figured my hex socket was junk, the bolt was junk, so I welded the hex socket to the bolt. It broke. Out came the angle grinder and I cut it up and broke it off.

A little more cleanup to do on the heads and off to the machine shop. They are slightly scored. I can feel some of it with my fingernail. Hopefully they aren't too far gone. Ive definitely seem pics that seen worse. This is my 1st time dealing with a bad bearing, so we will see.

More pics later.

Ordered a GS crank pulley, Gates timing set w/ the Kevlar belt, Group N motor mounts and a Killer B pickup over the weekend.

Hoping to get the heads from the shop this week and work on reassembling the motor next weekend. Still quite a few small things to get though.

thank you.

Primarily the G35. I just bought it a couple months ago. And I'm trying to get it set up for autocross for next year. My current autocross car (Mazda 3) needs a few things to be winter-ready; mainly swapping suspension and installing a muffler (no muffler currently installed). And I've got a '79 Cherokee that is a very very very long term project. Lots of racing (and race cars) has happened since starting the frame-off project several years ago.

IP&T Turbo/AVCS oil lines, Perrin Inlet and Samco BPV hose ordered. (list updated)

Spent the majority of last weekend cleaning the interior. Noticed that a section of sound deadening was lifted up and pulled on it. Broke it off and then realized that water had gotten under it. So in my greatest moment of brilliance, I spent the next 6 hours stripping 100% of the sound deadening out of the car. I found a couple of areas that were starting to rust. The car has obviously had water damage. I'm 99.9% sure I'm going to go back and spray in some Lizard Skin or something similar. But I am going to put some carpet back in and run it as-is, mainly out of curiosity. It was extremely heavy and I'm crazy enough to leave it out if I can bear the noise.

This weekend is cleaning up motor parts I'm keeping and listing everything I still need to finish.

Haha - you just said "I am building a family car and not a race car."

Although if you family likes loud cars removing the sound deadening and adding groupN mounts is the way to go.

Haha. I'm slowly learning that my wife hates this car for several reasons (some I may not know just yet). And my long term plan is shifting toward the OBXT being my daily instead of hers. It's turning into a very abnormal car that I don't want to trust her ability to monitor noises or gauges. And I can cope with much worse driveability than she can. My current DD is a Mazda 3 that is aggressively set up for autocross. 500/650lb springs, poly motor mounts, poly bushings everywhere, no muffler and my 3 year old son is perfectly fine in the backseat. Last year was a 400whp cammed Evo on 12k/14k springs, all poly bushings, and 285 wide 200tw tires. My mostly stock G35 that is planned for next year's racing is currently my most comfy ride.

I fully admit that once I saw how heavy that little piece of sound deadening was, I went bezerk and did it all in race car mode. And I want to see for myself how bad it really is. I am planning to re-sound deaden the whole thing and I'm glad I got to a couple rust spots before they came worse. But that won't happen until next year due to my inability to paint after a couple weeks from now.
