Zeppie Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Hi Everyone, I have been hearing a weird noise lately coming from the engine. Hope someone can give some insight. The sound is a sort of whining noise. This noise can be heard as soon as I start the engine, and would become louder if I turn the steering wheel. The noise does, however, go away sometimes after the engine temp has gone to normal. Along with this, I've notice a sound coming from my right front wheel when I turn right, standing still. This resembles the noise you would hear when turning on loose gravel. My guess is either power steering pump/motor or v-belt. My hope is belt, as this would be cheaper. Any thoughts? Additionally, would a reconditioned power steering pump be advised or should I rather install a new authentic Subaru pump? Also, where would I be able to get a Haynes workshop manual in hardcover/pdf? I live in South Africa, so eBay hard cover orders is a bit tricky. Oh yeah, I'm driving a 2006 Legacy 3.0R-B Premium. Thanks!
starionesir Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 My guess would be pump whining. How old is the fluid? Anybody open up the system before this started. Possible air still trapped?
Zeppie Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 Hi starionesir, Thanks for the reply. Fluid may be old. My plan is to suck out the fluid and put in new fluid over the weekend. Could this improve the problem? Somebody may have opened up the system before I purchased the car. Got the car in December '14. How would I get the air out? Is there a "bleeding" process? Thanks
starionesir Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Bleeding is as simple and turning the wheels lock to lock a bunch of times to bleed the air. Changing the fluid may help if it's old and contaminated. I know the gt's had some issues with the pump o rings. Not sure if you car takes the same pump or not.
rmoore5 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Many times the o-ring at the inlet hose to the top of the pump has failed due to age. It begins to suck air, especially during cooler weather. Causing this noise due to cavitation. This a well documented failure. Get a new one from your dealership for a couple bucks.
