ben64 Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Hi ! I've just got my Legacy 3.0R and I don't have any idea of which oil was used before and the level is at the mini so it is time to change the oil and its filter Any advise ? Thanks by advance,
GTEASER Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Where do you live? Need to know seasonal temperatures. What oil viscosity is recommended in the owners manual? How do you typically drive? What OCI will you be using? GTEASER's 2012 Legacy GT - Sold GTEASER's 2009 XTeaser - Sold GTEASER's 1992 Legacy SS - Sold
ben64 Posted July 1, 2015 Author Posted July 1, 2015 France ( -5°C in winter and 40° these days ) between 5W30 and 10W40 ... Hard after the engine warmup of course OCI : as frequently as needed by an old engine like mine
GTEASER Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 My recommendation would be to start with 10W40 conventional oil on 5000 km (3000 mile) oil change intervals. If you find the motor is burning any oil, try a 10W40 synthetic like Castrol Edge for the next change. If you're still burning oil, switch to 20W50 conventional on the next oil change, that should get rid of most of it. You could also do 20W50 synthetic at that point if you want to. If you start running 20W50, just give the motor a little more time to warm up and keep the rpms low when it's cold. And welcome to the board!!!! ben64 Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 ok thanks, I've just check the level and today the level is perfectly at the right max level so maybe I was not wake up yesterday when I see the oil level at the mini. I guess warm up the engine is not when the water temp is at the average level; it is better to wait a little more like 10 min maybe ? I come from a diesel with turbo and I'm wondering if I need to wait before turn off the engine; I don't have turbo on the 3.0R so I believe I can turn off immediately but I prefer to ask
GTEASER Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Sometimes if you are not on perfectly level ground you can get an incorrect reading on the dipstick. When the water temp settles at the normal reading the engine is warmed up. You don't need to wait to turn off the engine, that is only necessary for turbos that are only oil cooled. Water cooled turbos don't need cool down time with the engine running. GTEASER's 2012 Legacy GT - Sold GTEASER's 2009 XTeaser - Sold GTEASER's 1992 Legacy SS - Sold
ben64 Posted July 2, 2015 Author Posted July 2, 2015 ok For the level ground I was before relatively horizontal, I do it generally at the same place in order to be sure and probably the engine was not turn off enough longer for all the oil going down the carter ?
