whiteknight24 Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 I recently changed the ATF fluid on my 09 legacy 4 spd auto. I drained it through the drain nut and then filled it using the dip stick tube. I added 9.5 qts of Subaru factory ATF, (per the manual). My buddies say I added to much oil. Because when I check my dip stick, the oil runs a quarter of the way up the stick, (it looks wet). How do I know I added to much? Does anyone think I should have removed the oil pan to drain it completely? Could it be over filled? I need some opinions on this situtation please.
whitrzac Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 You only get ~3qts when draining pulling the drain plug. DO NOT drive the car untill you fill it to the proper level.
orndog Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 9.5 qts seems like it should be enough to fill the pan and torque convertor, but I had a stick for 10 years and now a CVT.
whiteknight24 Posted May 19, 2015 Author Posted May 19, 2015 Should I drain the clean oil and only add 3qts ? or should I remove the pan? How do I get all the old oil out?
orndog Posted May 19, 2015 Posted May 19, 2015 Have you started it at all? If not then simply find the drain/fill capacity for sure, drain it all, and start at about a quart less than it calls for and go from there.

How do I get all the old oil out? yes. start with 3qts. check dipstick and add accordingly. it should end up taking 3.5ish. car needs to be running. flushing is the only way to get everything out.
whiteknight24 Posted May 20, 2015 Author Posted May 20, 2015 Appreciate the feedback. i drained the 9 qts i put in and refilled it with about 3.5 qts. a Subaru specialist shop in my home town said the same thing, i put way to much in. 9.5 qts (per manual) is only for rebuilding the tranny. Car runs great now. Thanks!
