downpipe heat confusion

Recommended Posts

Posted

My front passenger side CV boot is torn and leaking slowly.

1. Is this due to normal wear or can nearby down pipe heat be suspect?

2. Some say that heat wrapping the downpipe can accelerate rust from salt buildup/winter driving in snow States. Is it true?

3. If downpipe heat causes nearby CV boot wear, is Is it possible to spray the downpipe (without removal) only in the area near the CV boot to prevent heat damage?

So you have an aftermarket downpipe with nothing on it to retain the heat?

My Invidia dp pipe is heat wrapped down to the last bend on both cars. My wagon has been that way for 3 of the 4 years its been on.

The wagon has the original right axle still.

Correct

Just asking, do you sit in traffic a lot, or only drive the car for short distances letting the car idle ?

my dp is unwrapped too and just saw that my passenger side inner boot is ripped...maybe I will buy some wrap

I do both

FWIW, I really like my downpipe heat blanket. Easy to install and does a great job.

Is there any heat control option that doesn't require removing the DP?

I'm working on a heat shield now to sell. I have one on my own car that I made and it works great. My Cobb is wrapped now, but I drove it without wrap for about 18 months and with my heat shield, and no issues-still the stock axle.

I'll bet it has a to to do with how much city vs. highway driving you do, and how hard you push the car. Sitting in traffic, EGTs may never get that high, but there's zero airflow down there. In summer months I'll bet it heats up pretty good.

On the same token, pushing it really hard on the highway or any high speed situation probably heats it up just as well.

That's my point ^ but at least on the highway, there's a ton of air flow and you never just do that and park the car.

Now if you did some WOT and then had to stop fast to sit in traffic...

As I have always thought highway miles are the easiest on the car. They like to be driven for distance.

Sorry if this is listed elsewhere, but the common CV boot tear on these cars...is it due to down pipe heat? Or just normal wear?

Heat. It's also why the valve cover gasket on the passenger side usually fails first.

Can you wrap the catted section of the downpipe? I've had my downpipe on for a little over 15k and it is not wrapped and I also have a torn cv boot that threw grease all over my downpipe and stuff

FWIW, the catted Invidia dp that I bought from BMB is not wrapped around the cat, just the one twist of wrap to get past it.

You could possibly install a blanket without removal, I wouldn't bother trying to wrap tho.

Do you wrap the top section before the cat then after the cat? I have a cnt so the cat is in the same spot

My research pointed me to not wrap the cat itself. It may not cause an issue, but one school of thought is that wrapping the cat can cause excess heat to build up there to the point of damaging the cat converter and I didn't want that to happen. YMMV, and unfortunately it *will* be the hottest part on the pipe so not wrapping it is a bit unfortunate I guess.

Someone point me to a good heat shield or blanket so I don't have to take my DP off please

I had my downpipe ceramic coated, it significantly brought down my temps in the engine bay, and (from feel) seemed to bring down the heat radiating off of the downpipe. the pipe stays warm for much longer after the car is off though, warm to the touch after a few hours when the stock downpipe would have been cold

I did not wrap the catted section of my Cobb pipe, but it's right down at the joint with the midpipe vs. those that are catted at the firewall. I'd likely have wrapped it if it were at the firewall.
