Oil Analysis Help

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to get opinions on my oil analysis from Blackstone. Nothing seems alarming but slightly higher than the averages. I have only owned the car since October 2014 and current mileage is 28,750. I purchased it with 24k miles so haven't put that many miles on it. Turbo was replaced less than 1000 miles ago but it was more a preventative measure due to oil leaking from the seal between the hot and cold side. Never really used any oil but was annoying due to oil smell in cabin on occasion. Any feedback would be appreciated.

It seems highly unusual that your car has such low mileage for it's year. It makes me wonder if your car sat for a long time somewhere. If it did that can affect the integrity of the seals. Or the odometer is a lie and your engine is older than it claims to be.

Car had a clean car fax and service records matched the mileage. Original owner only had a work commute of 8 miles or so a day. Didn't drive any long distances except the occasional visit to see relatives in Seattle. Based on the condition/cleanliness of car, underbody and engine compartment everything seems to correlate. I have had the car thoroughly gone through at the dealership and independent shop.

I understand your skepticism. I already own the car so what is done is done. My real question is how does the oil analysis look. Just want feedback.

Honestly, I'd listen to Blackstone. They are the pros so take what they say and run with it. Send another sample at the next oil change and see what they say that time. At 28k that thing maybe still wearing in..haha.

Wear metals are a bit elevated but there is really nothing else bad about that report. The tricky thing with uoa's is, let's say you were to run this oil for 5k. Would your wear metals double? Would silicon double? I think I rember reading that most of the wear occurs early on in an oil change interval, and then slowly declines as the miles go up. I know that might not sound right, and I forget the science behind it. But if that were the case, this report wouldn't be too bad. I would just resample again in the future and see how things look, but I wouldn't be worried at all in your shoes.

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully I am just paranoid that this car is a ticking time bomb. Definitely should have done more research before purchasing it but it fit my needs so well as far as size, utility and ground clearance. I do quite a bit of city driving (80%) so that could be a contributing factor. Not sure if time is a factor but even though oil only had 2500 miles it was almost 4 months old. As suggested I will re-sample a few thousand miles after my next oil change and see how the results compare.
