Welcome. First, I would look at the stickies on the lgt if you haven't done so already. There is a lot of info within them that will help you immensely. Second, would be the simple part and getting a car fax to see some of the history of the car. Third, if everything checks out, get a compression and leak down test performed by an independent garage/mechanic who knows turbo subies. These cars have quite the issues, and unless prepared to deal with them properly, will cause you a massive headache :p, and a lot of cash.

^This, and I would replace the turbo right away if it hasn't been replaced already. All vf40 turbos fail prematurely, mine did at 87,000 miles. There are some magic ones out there, but I wouldn't count on it. Its just a good excuse to upgrade! And you will be due for a timing belt at least within a year and a half (105,000miles). Get off the stock tune ASAP. If you put some money into it right off the rip, you will be ok. Its worth it because these cars are fun to drive every single time you get into them! Welcome and good luck.
