SSpeed Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 I have the engine out of my '99 Outback. Clutch friction disk and pressure plate were good, but the throwout bearing sounds awful. I got a new one (right part #) but it has play on the input shaft sleeve. I can move the bearing up and down probably at least 1/16th of inch. I got rid of the old one before I noticed the play, so I can only assume it had play as well. How much play is too much? I don't think there is enough room for a sleeve. This is just the sluggish 165hp EJ25d, so tolerances are a little more forgiveable.
Brady Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 You likely need one of these. http://www.smart-service.com/store-tranquil-sleeve-kit.html The snout gets worn and the bearing doesn't ride very well. This will fix the fit you describe. That will replace your throwout bearing, so hopefully you can return the one you already bought.
SSpeed Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Holy moly, $150 is crazy for a throwout bearing and aluminum sleeve.
SSpeed Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 I'm still debating if it's as bad as I think it is, or normal, here's a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Assw3BjrwEI
Brady Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 I think the sleeve is machined stainless steel, which isn't too crazy in price for that. It might seem a lot, but it's better than a damaged transmission casing if it fails.
rmoore5 Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Thanks, that's what I was thinking. Holy moly, $150 is crazy for a throwout bearing and aluminum sleeve. Actually it looks like it is $209 for the 2005 model !!!
travrach Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 $20 speedi sleeve is all that's needed. Can get on Rock Auto or maybe local parts store. But it is best to do something, it may bind on you if nothing is done. It's only going to get worse left like that.
SSpeed Posted April 27, 2015 Author Posted April 27, 2015 So this guy? http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=257633&cc=1389405&jnid=509&jpid=1 Seems so small? And will there be enough room to install it based on my video?
travrach Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 If you looked it up based on model info that should be it. Yes they seem small, but they work good. One is just a install tool and then you break the one piece of the sleeve. You can see it here- http://www.skf.com/binary/81-61918/TT08_021.pdf
SSpeed Posted April 28, 2015 Author Posted April 28, 2015 Am I understanding it right? It makes it sound like it's for the shaft seal vs the throwout bearing? http://www.skf.com/binary/12-61211/457892.pdf
travrach Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 They make all kinds, and they do both. It's just repairing a bad surface.
rmoore5 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 I think that sleeve may be for the shaft seal, it is only 11mm long. Here is the link to the dimensional drawing of that sleeve : http://www.skf.com/us/products/seals/industrial-seals/power-transmission-seals/wear-seals-skf-speedi-sleeve/index.html?prodid=791701023&imperial=false I don't know the dimensions of your transmission snout, to be able to find the correct sleeve. My 2005 had some wear on the snout, I greased it and put it in. It seems to be working probably repairing it would of been better. At least you didn't wait as long as I did :
SSpeed Posted April 29, 2015 Author Posted April 29, 2015 Holy cow! That's the worst I've seen! Probably took out some clutch fingers with it?
Max Capacity Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 There should be some gap. put a small amount of high temp grease on the snout and slide the new TOB on. PM "underdog" and ask him for guidance...oh yea. you should buy your parts from him also. Mike at www.AZPinstalls.com is another good source. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. rmoore5 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 Actually no, I am still running the same clutch and pressure plate.
