dirtyspeed Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 I have been doing some research and was wondering what all is needed to go away from the dual mass flywheel to a standard flywheel. It's on a 05 lgt I just purchased and it needs a clutch so I would like to upgrade away from dual mass... New to the whole Scooby thing so any info would help or point me in the right direction. Thank you for your time...
whitetiger Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 06-07 wrx clutch and flywheel. thats all you need.

dgpro5000 Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Can you make the same reccommendation for a may 04 build date? ToB is going and need a clutch
compsurge Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 If you're driving stock, get a Subaru clutch kit for the 07-09 LGT. I have mixed feelings about the FX-300, but my second one has been better than the first (just get used to clutch drops in all but first gear and it will last longer). The ACT HDSS is my personal favorite. You may need the Tranquil TSK3 TOB kit. You want the OEM 06+ WRX/ 07-09 LGT flywheel. If you're going in for a TOB, do all the work now and plan for the TSK3. You may be able to return it if the quill/snout is in good shape.
dgpro5000 Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 That was my plan. I contacted fredbeanparts and he couldnt guarentee me that the 07 clutch and flywheel would fit. My build date is may 04 and I gave him my vin and he said hes sold 2 of these setups to early build date cars that didnt work. And once Ive got it in the car and it doesnt work Im out 700 bucks. If I have to go back to a dmfw after that itd be another 800. Kinda thinking just another 05 oem dmfw and clutch might be the best option. Car is stage 2 . At 140k. Drive very reasonable. Not tracked. And pretty sure this is the stock clutch. Any way to tell without opening it up? Thanks for the help. I need to get something soon. Its pretty bad in 1st gear right now.
compsurge Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 They can't guarantee it because the parts system says you need a dual mass flywheel and original clutch. Don't put that POS back in. The DMFW will break. It is the same shortblock and same transmission in all years (05-09 5MT). Get the ACT HDSS (or other uprated clutch kit that you feel like getting in 06+WRX/07-09 LGT fitment), OEM flywheel, and bite the bullet once.
Scubaru03 Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 I have a build date of June 04 and changed to a smfw and 07-09 lgt clutch from Fred beans with out issues. Also just installed a lwfw with an exedy fjk1001 3 weeks ago with out issues. Also would highly recommend the ts3 kit for the snout of the transmission mine was pretty rough and if you don't need just return it. A must have is the hex bolt kit for the flywheel versus the easily strip able torques that come from the factory. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
compsurge Posted April 19, 2015 Posted April 19, 2015 There's nothing wrong with Torx. They actually don't strip easily, but if you don't have the right tools to work with them, it could be a hassle. It's up to you whether to install the Torx or the hex bolts. I have reinstalled the Torx twice. You will want to use threadlocker on the bolts when reinstalling.
dgpro5000 Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Thanks guys. Ill be ordering an 07 kit tommorow. Any other bearings I should get while im in there?
ssbtech Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I too have an 07 LGT clutch/FW in my 05. There was some concern that very early 04 built 05 models used a pull instead of push type clutch, but I don't think anyone has actually come across that. I did the Tranquil TSK-3 kit (http://www.fredbeansparts.com/subaru-legacy-gt-tranquil-tsk3-sleeve-kit.html) while I had the chance. I think the OEM clutches have held up reasonably well on stage 2 cars. They only really complain when driven hard or launched lots.
Scubaru03 Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Which way does your slave cylinder point? If it pushes out towards the back of the car into the fork you have the push style clutch. Which is what the 07 lgt has. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
ssbtech Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Yeh, everyone here has a push. I'm not sure where the talk about the pull came from. But better check first!
Akasa Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I have never found evidence to the early MY05s having a PULL style clutch. I think that's just a rumor. I have a 04 built MY05 Wagon, my setup is push, and i've bought the 07-09 clutch kit with TSK3. http://www.fredbeansparts.com/subaru-legacy-gt-o-e-m-clutch-kit-s.html I managed to get my clutch kit extremely cheap due to a massive sale that FB was having, so watch for that.
ssbtech Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 You mean pull style Yeh, mine's an 04 built as well, push style. I just thought I'd throw that out there
whitetiger Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 the only late model cars with a pull style are 02-05 2.0L WRX, 04+ WRX STI, and 07-09 LGT Spec.B with the 6mt. All other N/A subarus, 06+Wrx and 05+ LGT used a push style.
compsurge Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 There were unconfirmed reports of factory pull-style LGT's. msprank has seen at least one.
