weather seal issue

Hi all, my car was recently in the body shop for a crushed quarter panel and door from a hit and run accident.

While it was in the shop, I had them replace the weather seal that runs from the front to the rear of the car. It was especially worn in the rear, rubber was sticking out from behind the glass, and it was torn in some places. The window also makes a terrible wind noise like its wide open anywhere above around 45 mph or higher. It also let's water in the vehicle while its being washed, although not during rain.

So, they replaced the seal and I thought problem fixed. But when I picked my car up, the tech pointed out to me that although the seal was bad my issue would not be fixed. He informed me that the door isn't making a proper seal, on the drivers side you can see the glass is pressed much more firmly against the seal, whereas the passenger side rear door hardly seals.

He told me to contact Subaru and find out if there's a recall which I can do tomorrow. I'm wondering if anyone else is having this issue and has a fix for it. Thanks!

I'm almost positive it's possible to adjust the window "tilt" so that it presses against the weatherstripping better. I'm on my phone so I can't look up how in the FSM, but I'm pretty sure that only an adjustment is needed.

Right, at the body shop he told me one of his repair guys was able to make an adjustment on the door handle side of the door, but it didn't yield much difference and that it wasn't possible at all to make an adjustment on the hinge side of the door. He said once it was bolted in, that was it.

Even though the link below says forester, it looks nearly identical to the adjustment for a legacy. It looks like you should be able to adjust the tilt of the window in the front, near the side view mirrors, and towards the rear where the exterior handle is.

If the above does not give you enough space. You can also adjust the door, just need to loosen front fender to get access to the hinge bolts.

Actually the procedure on the Legacy is different than what I posted in the link above. Shown below is for a 2009 Legacy, but your 2008 should be the same.

i'd have to check how many miles my warranty was for...never usually have to use warranties cause i am out of the mileage quick since i do a lot of driving...i think i'm getting close to 80k miles with this car now...my last mazda had 240k miles on it before i sold it

Here is the issue...I took the door apart and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to adjust the window

That's an easy fix that doesn't involve any adjustment most likely. Its sticky new rubber on clean glass lol think of a wet hand on a balloon.

Just rub some fine graphite powder on it. Graphite tools don't scratch my glass artwork in my glassblowing studio so your window should be fine with it! =]

thanks...maybe i will try that...the thing is there shouldn't be any rubber contacting the window...it should be that fuzzy lining on the inside of the rubber seal that touches the window...the window is moving on it's way down and causing the rubber to catch...after taking it apart i didn't see any type of adjustments that could be made so a way to make the seal not catch is my aim now...first i am going to try to clean it really well and see how that does

Also keep in mind that as that rubber sits in the sun and ages it stiffens and hardens, it'll go away soon enough and quicker if dry lubed somehow lol

i actually just forgot my window down over the weekend with it partially folded down and i didn't notice it so it has a weird dent in it now...should be sunny here today so i'm sure my car will heat up and hopefully fix it...we'll see...i just find it weird that there is play in the window...if i grab the top corner i can rotate it towards the front of the car and towards the back of the car...never had this issue in any other car that i have owned...on top of that the half a quart of oil consumption between oil filter changes (every 7500 miles)...have to carry extra oil in the trunk now cause i know the low oil light is going to turn on at some point...this may steer me away from subaru in the future

I know the feeling, I'm on my first Subaru as well, but a family friend has been delivering newspapers everyday for over 40 years, and for the last 20 has only used Subaru's. His vehicles all end up with over 300,000+ some 400,000+ MILES!

I kinda see it as that little extra oil helps insure longer engine life. Plus we should be checking fluids on all vehicles every time we fuel up! ;)

Btw about the window, mine moves some but not sure how much compared to yours, maybe yours has a broken track or something?

i like the car but the oil and this window thing are 2 annoying things that i probably won't be able to fix for good...i drive at least 85 miles per work day which is about 99% highway and fuel up once a week...i'm probably not going to check my oil once a week as i'm only adding maybe a 1/2 quart sometime before i hit my 7500 mile oil change...this is a defect in design and i've never owned a car that consumed oil like this one has...a car is a tool for me to get from point a to point b along with whatever or whomever i need to bring with me and i want the most low maintenance car i can get...yea i know checking/adding oil is a 5 minute maintenance thing but the point is i shouldn't have to check it cause it shouldn't be consumed...my 3 previous cars were oil changes and wear and tear issues that have needed work and i was able to drive them into high mileage due to my driving habits...i just hope this car lasts as long as my last one...if it does maybe i will consider another subaru...but if i read about oil consumption issues in their new models when i'm in the market for a new car then i'll most likely pass

There's also going to be extra play in our windows due to the frameless design, which I personally love btw!

i'd say it's about a half inch when the window is near the bottom...i can check sometime and report back...what do you mean by frameless?...there is a frame around my window when i open the door with the window down...i actually don't mind them just cause it's easier to shut an open door and you typically don't have any water sealing problems with the windows over time
