Koni Confusion

Probably a retarded question, but are the only koni shock options for a 2005 LGT the kind where you drill out your stock shocks and insert the koni shock (no direct shock replacement)?

As far as I know the only option for Koni is cut and drill. But that's only for the fronts, the backs are a complete replacement.

Looks like bilstein is the only performance upgraded direct replacement shock. Kind of disappointing. Thanks for the info

KYB is essentially an oem replacement, right?

For the most part. A full set of 4 KYBs can be bought for $190 shipped after rebate (until April 31st) so they are very cost effective replacements.

IIRC KYB is the supplier of the OEM struts for Subaru, however the KYB G2 struts are 15-20% stiffer than the OEM version.

I have the Koni's on my wagon. The cut and drill and insert isn't too bad at all. I did mine in an afternoon and I love how they changed the car. If you want to keep your struts untouched pick up a pair of donor struts from someone here or local craigslist and you can have everything ready to swap in.

I should have held off and purchased a wagon instead of the spec.B

Did you change your top hats? What's else did you need besides springs and the inserts?

I did, got OEM from Subaru. You need a drill, a 9/16 or 1/2 drill bit, a center punch, the ability to correctly mark the center of the bottom of the OEM strut body, a pipe cutter capable of cutting 2.5" pipe (IIRC), red locktite, various wrenches and sockets, the ability to read, understand and follow directions. Search in the modifications forum and you'll find a good detailed walk through.

Thanks. No idea why the tapatalk app doesn't pull this stuff up in the search function

Yeah, as long as you follow the instructions and read the walk-throughs on here the Koni installation is really pretty straight-forward. Measure twice, cut once. The upgrade in ride/handling is well worth it. I stayed on stock springs.

When I did my installation, here's what I ordered (you'll need 2 of everything listed). Bump stops were only ordered because I found out mine were torn once I had everything apart.

Koni front strut inserts - PN 8610-1447

Koni rear struts - PN 8010-1053

OEM front strut top mount - PN 20320AG00A

OEM rear strut top mount - PN 20370AG00A

OEM front bump stop - PN 20321AA201

Here's the additional parts you may need/could order. I opted to reuse all of these parts. Again, you'll need 2 of each.

OEM front conical washer - PN 20326AA000

OEM front upper spring seat - PN 20323AG00B

OEM front dust cover - PN 20322AG00A

OEM front spring

OEM rear dust cover - PN 20372AE00A

OEM rear upper spring seat - PN 20375AE00A

OEM rear spring

FWIW some venders here sell pre-assembled konis in OEM housings for those who just want a bolt in option with no strut cutting. nots sure if anyone mentioned this in this thread.

I am not sure they do anymore. AZP and M Sprank both used to offer that, but no one was ever returning cores and they had to give up on the service.

Not sure if any other vendors offer them.
