witek Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 As my radiator has sprung a leak, it's come time to replace it. I've noticed that there's two variants on parts sites, manual and automatic. Are these interchangeable? I've got a 2005 GT 5MT. Cheers
whitetiger Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 the automatic has a provision for trans fluid lines. Get the MT version.

I had to trim my top hose when I installed an aftermarket radiator to keep it off the fan the the pulley. Also trimmed the bottom hose just to get everything to line up better. This was with a Koyorad - pretty sure they are around the same size. My OBXT build
Max Capacity Posted April 6, 2015 Posted April 6, 2015 OH yea, buy two more gallons of coolant too, big tanks. My fan cut through the first top hose,(it was 3 years old) I put a new on and carry a spare in the car. It's been fine for 4 months now. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Engine Build - Click Here
Phillip J. Fry Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 id personally stay stock. seems its not an issue until it cracks. the others have stated cutting this and cutting that an carry an extra hose? i say stay stock and dont worry about it for another 100k miles.
Merc6 Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Stock is cool if all you do is drive to and from. 2005 Satin White Pearl Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Unlimited 5EAT (Project Car) 2019 Agate Black Ford Explorer XLT 4WD (DD)

I upgraded mine because my engine was running hot in very specific situations - driving over the Sierra Nevada mountains in 98 degree + temperatures. If all you are doing is driving to and from work, I agree with Phillip, stay stock / get an OEM replacement for $100. My OBXT build
witek Posted April 7, 2015 Author Posted April 7, 2015 I wish, called the dealer and OEM is $375 (canadian) Most online rads state that they're good for both manual and auto, or don't specify. Makes it a bit confusing as I don't know what I'm getting.
keenster Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 Auto aftermarkets need a separate cooler. like a transmission cooler. very easy mod.
FJuan Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 I bought an OEM aftermarket one for an AT, had a hard time finding a MT. Fitted the trans ports with end caps and used some JB Weld around the caps to prevent them from coming loose. My wife's balls are delicious.

You do know that transmission fluid goes through that part of the radiator not coolant.... You didn't need to cap them. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Engine Build - Click Here
FJuan Posted April 7, 2015 Posted April 7, 2015 That's what I thought too, until water started pouring out when I was rinsing it out. My wife's balls are delicious.
Merc6 Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 Auto aftermarkets need a separate cooler. like a transmission cooler. very easy mod. Not sure I'd run it independent of radiator up north. Mine is running from radiator to the aux cooler so coolant can be used as a heating element in the winter. 3 cars and haven't blocked off the aux cooler. Cruze is manual but the lower grille stays shut all winter accomplishing the same task just about. That's what I thought too, until water started pouring out when I was rinsing it out. LOL wait, what? 2005 Satin White Pearl Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Unlimited 5EAT (Project Car) 2019 Agate Black Ford Explorer XLT 4WD (DD)
whitrzac Posted April 14, 2015 Posted April 14, 2015 That's what I thought too, until water started pouring out when I was rinsing it out. You have a faulty radiator then... ATF and coolent do not mix, ever. They may have been oil cooler lines?

I made both of these mistakes Also don't overheat these cars, even slightly. Maybe its because i have 140k on my GT, but when i sprung a rad leak on the freeway (i didn't notice till i got home and my temp was almost in the red), I had an external head gasket leak a week later... These heads are aluminum, they warp around 230 F +
