Ive searched but I couldn't find any threads talking about this specifically but how long do the 05-06 EJ255 tend to last on average?

I have 140k on mine, getting up their in mileage and im wondering if a shortblock replacement is something I should be considering in the near future

Any body on here with high miles on their original motor?

I plan to replace mine every oil change http://www.bawcforums.org/vbb/images/smilies/awesome.gif

It depends entirely on the kind of maintenance your car has received and if it's got the proper mods for reliability.

We have a member here with 270k on his original motor and turbo because he did everything right and also runs an Amsoil bypass filter kit.

There's also plenty who replaced their shortblock before 100k.

If your car has had the "normal" run of the mill dealer maintenance or maintenance not specifically tailored to these cars, 140k is definitely nearing the bitter end.

Tell us more about your car. Any mods? What's the ownership history like? Do you service it or a shop? What shop?

Anything you can think of will help you get the best answer.

Cliff notes version: Start saving because your rebuild is probably coming.

I am the second owner it seems to have had the banjo bolt screens removed fairly early in its life considering it is still the original motor/turbo as far as mods go fairly light just basic bolt ons up/downpipe exhaust it's been running cobb ots stg2 for most of its life ~90k

Oil changes and maintenance were done on time by previous owner and then religiously by me

What's the average cost for a short block replacement for these cars?

See my Shopping List. Average tends to run in the 5-7k range, though.

That's great news, sounds like the owner knew what they were doing.

What kind of oil are you using?

Great choice. Sounds like you're doing everything right.

If you want to know your engine health, I recommend paying for a compression and leakdown test. Then start saving for a shortblock.

Run it until it's broken. Take care of it and there is absolutely no reason why it won't go 250K and it sounds like you are doing all the right things taking care of it.

Good luck and keep up the good work.:)

132k

Will I see any early warning signs before the motor goes or is it more like a one day its there the next its gone type of deal?

I tend to overthink these kind of things and get myself all worked up about potential issues haha

That is a great idea

Ive actually been meaning to do an oil analysis just havent gotten around to it. Definitely on my next change

Do it. Best $25 you can spend to find out what's going on inside the heart of your car.

That said, your comp numbers look good. That 139 cylinder I hope is just a fluke/misread/whatever, but, keep an eye on it for sure. Hey, at least it's not #4!

Blackstone used oil analysis would give some insight into you motor health.

There should be no reason to believe your motor can live well into the 200k mile range with proper care. Buyer of my sedan just sold it 170k miles on the originals and my wagon has 143k miles.

You mean can't, right?

Posted
Sí, it can last into the 200k mile range. We have one members member here with 270k miles on OEM motors AND turbos.

Start strapping up different turbos, not checking your tune or oil, and beating on the thing, and the chances go down significantly.

fify.

ALL of this

6700 for me so far.

Remember this guy, you may need his services in the future.

we purchased our lgt with 98k in feb of 2014. It went on jack stands in sep 14 for a new shortblock, due to low compression in cylinder 4 from a cracked piston ring land. mileage was 108k. OIL CONSUMPTION (see below) was ridiculous from the day of purchase. I performed a compression test before purchase and had good numbers, didnt do a leak down test because compression was 'ok'. Put the car all back together christmas week 2014. drove 900 miles on the new engine and the turbo blew up.

Everytime you fill up, check the oil level. Do your thing at the pump, when your done filling a tank, that is enough time for the level to stabilize in the pan, check the oil level then. consistently. If you start eating up a bunch of oil thats your first tell tale. Also if you have a cobb accessport you can monitor things like knock, feedback knock, those are good indicators of internal engine health. Also, ensuring you have no boost leaks is a great way to keep the turbo charger happy and healthy. Most importantly dont worry about 'problems', paranoia is a sob.

So the motor blew twice? Or did it survive the turbo suicide?

The best advice I can offer is to spend lots of time on LGT.com ;)

Seems, as said above your doing everything right.

What is your DD like, mostly highway or all in town ? These cars do much better when they can run on the highway.

Never let it get low on oil, always top it off. These things don't use oil in a linear fashion.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.

I drive 40% Local and 60% Highway, I believe most of the mileage on the car is freeway miles. I have been datalogging the past week or so and ive noticed a couple things

I do see some feedback knock/fine knock ranging from -2 for feedback and -1.4 for fine knock up to around -4 for both. It always occurs at ~2100, ~2500, and sometimes at about 2900-3000 all within 2000-3000 everywhere else it seems clear. Ive also had the DAM drop to .2(This was actually a while ago, roughly about a month) on one occasion and .4 on another. .2 needed an ecu reset and it was fine again for a long time, .4 corrected itself back to 1 within a mile.

Questions: Is this indicative of false knock because it only happens at those exact rpms is real knock more erratic or consistent like this

Can false knock drop DAM?

I will be posting some logs when I can pull them from my ap
