Gas light on instrument cluster not working

Recently purchased a 95 Subaru Legacy L, and lately I've been having to watch my gas handle.

The gas handle works, but sometimes I'll let it get really low, almost to E, and the gas light never comes on! I'm wondering if i have a floating gas handle and I just need to keep letting the handle thing get closer and closer past E for the light to come on, because the handle thingy will be on E and the light hasn't ever came on.

I just go ahead and fill up my gas tank because I don't wanna keep driving and find out the light isn't working and then i run outta gas and have to find a way for someone to bring me gas!

I have the same car and I got it pretty far in to E till the light came on and that was when I was going around a bend. I wonder if the is a way to hook up something to tell us how many miles we have left to drive till its empty like some other cars do.

it triggers when you are about 12.5 to 13.5 gallons down, so 2.5 to 3.5 gallons left in a 15.9 gal tank. my 95 wagon was pretty steady on that, but the GT sedan never did work correctly. now, two years later, my wagon light is not working more than it does. we watch mileage when driving all our vehicles just to make sure.

as mentioned, the tank holds 15.9 gal, 60 liters.

if you are not filling 14 gal,

you have not run it down to the ''low gas'' light.

keep track of your miles and gallons to fill up.

then figure your MPG.

this will let you know how many miles per tank.

remember, city will be less than hiway.

if i fill up at E,

it takes 10 - 12 gallons.

I never fill up till my gas light comes on. I try to use as much old fuel as possible before adding new fuel. Gas light comes on for me when the needle goes about a quarter inch below E. And then i'll make a trip to the gas station and fill up to the top (14-15 gallons)

1999 legacy gt and never had the gas light come on. I have refueled at 14 plus gallons a few times as well. maybe no workie?

In tank fuel pumps use the fuel to cool the electric pump motor. You aren't doing yourself any favors by letting it run low.

I think my tank holds 10 to 11......

imprezas hold less than legos,

but legos 90 - 99 hold 15.9 gal.

my son's 95 leog sedan,

had issues with the fuel gauge, went to E early like they all seem to do.

but his alos had ''low gas'' light issues.

at one point it went from the light coming on when low on gas,

to the light coming on and then going off when low on gas.

he ended up re-filling evey 200 miles.

I use Premium gas in my subaru legacy l

I just wish the damn gas light would come on!

I guess the gas handle is messed up?

Should i be checking a fuse or something?

my daughter gave up trying to track the light, so she fills up at about 260 miles.

as for what to do, get a gas can, run it dry and see if the light actually does come on. if not, check the bulb, then the sending unit if you feel like getting that deep into it. im sure there is a fuse for it, and probably shared with many other things that would be out as well if it were blown.

Light works!

It came on yesterday!

I just drove and drove past the E tick thingy mark, and it came on, filled up 14.552 gallons, so yeah its around 15 gallons

$2.19/gallon, I put in about $32

cant think of any real way to check it, you can see the light when you turn the key on tho, if its the bulb youre worried about

The way the electrical circuit works is the low fuel warning bulb is supplied with a power source in the guage assembly. Then the ground wire runs to the fuel pump assembly where there is a thermistor (thermally variable resistor), positioned near the bottom of the tank. When the thermistor is in the gas it is kept cool by the gas and electrical resistance through it is too high to flow enough current to let the light in the dash light up. When the fuel level drops and it is not cooled by the gas it warms up from electrical resistance and when it warms up its electrical resistance drops and the light comes on, until the gas cools it again. Sorry a bit long there. So the easiest test is remove the back seat and pull the pump up out of the fuel and see if the light comes on.....or run it dry.
