avegajr Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 2008 subaru legacy 2.5 special edition I took the car to a midas we have gone to several times. I couldnt afford much so they put 4 used tires on the car. the tires were "slightly larger" than the previous ones. I drove to work about 40 mins and on the way back the car started to make clink and grinding noises. When i took it back the shop said that it needs a new transfer case, there was no oil coming out of it when they opened it up. I dont know much about cars, could driving the car 2 hours with the used tires have caused the damage to the transfer case? any input is greatly appreciated.
whitetiger Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Holy chit! 4 USED tires? No oil in the trans? Went to Midas? 3 strikes, you are out. odds are they put different sized tire on the car which killed the center differential. If you couldn't afford new properly sized tires, regular maintenance checks on your car, or going to a reputable shop, then you certainly cant afford to fix it now.
whitrzac Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 How did they open the no existent transfer case?
whitetiger Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 the rear section of the trans is technically called the transfer case since it houses the center differential.
Max Capacity Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 It's a 4eat tranny, correct ? Any way's you must of had a slow leak in the front diff case. I'm not expert on 4eat's. But from what I gather there is a separate case from the tranny. It has a different drain plug and takes different fluid from the automatic transmission. Have you had the fluids changed recently ? if so they may not have filled the front diff. "whitetiger", dose that sound right ? 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. whitetiger Posted March 30, 2015 Posted March 30, 2015 he doesnt really say if its a 4eat or a 5mt. if its a 5mt, the bad/unequal tire sizes could have fried the VLSD center, and low oil would mess up the bearings in the trans. If it is a 4eat, low oil would have disabled the tq converter and clutch actuation in the trans and the clutch pack that locks the center up would be worn out from bad tire sizes too. there is a whole list of possible problems, but the OP has to chime a bit more.
travrach Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 The 4 used tires, all exactly the same size or no?
smooth_ej20 Posted April 8, 2015 Posted April 8, 2015 The 4 used tires, all exactly the same size or no? even if they are the same size they could all be worn much differently. Whats the threshold for AWD? 2/32's difference? I hate shops that sell used tires, creates nothing but problems for customers. Hope OP gets it worked out
