Loss of radio reception with Rear Defroster

I'm sorry I tried to search for this so sorry if it's already been covered..

When it's cold out and I'm listening to regular FM radio and I turn on the rear defroster it will make my radio fuzz out is this a common problem or individual? Any idea where the ground would be?

I didn't search for this, but I also found a unplugged adapter near the top of the passenger side front foot well.. I plugged it back in and it turns on a cooling fan permanently is this normal?

Thanks in advance..

I lose radio reception as well. With no arial antenna I figured the antenna was in the window using the same metal as the defroster. Turn the defrost on and current runs through the antenna causing static. I could be wrong.

The footwell connector-was it green? If so that's the test connection used when flashing new maps to the ecu. If not a pic would help determine its use.

Rear defroster and radio is a known conflict. Just the way the car is made.

the two green plugs you saw are the test connectors, used for flashing ECU maps and troubleshooting things. they are not meant to be plugged in during normal operation of the vehicle

also the search here on the site is terrible. i found the best way to search forums is to go to google.com and type in

site:legacygt.com [search terms here without the brackets]

this will have google only search this site and usually gives the results you want!

if it's a green connector, unplug it now.

I've had the same defrost problem, I'm wondering if it is a grounding issue since they use the same wiring harness, I might try and run a secondary ground wire from the chassis of the radio to a grounding point. I won't be doing it for a while though, still too cold here!

Sweet guys thanks for the input! I unplugged the plug only plugged it in for a few minutes to see if it was something i was missing.. I was just curious as I typed out the other issue.

Thanks again!

I have the same problem with the rear defroster and radio reception. I also get poor reception when I'm using the center console power outlet.

If your radio works fine when the defroster is off, and than goes to static when the defroster is turned on, than you likely have a break in the defroster grid. I went through this in the fall. You'll need to get a circuit tester and test each line in the grid, to see where there's a break. Than you can repair it with defroster repair kit you can get at advance or autozone. go to youtube for videos on how to test the grid

agreed that our cars "just do this" unfortunately. However, another thing that can sometimes make it even worse is a worn alternator - worn out brushes inside can make it "electrically noisy", especially with the high load of the rear defroster.
