Dispatch20
This was super easy thanks to your walkthrough. Much appreciated! Glad it was helpful! I'll be adding a dashcam to my 3rd car next week. Also, I've found that one store on EBay sells the a118c camera packaged with a voltage regulator for a good price. "Estore009" or something like that.
kamnamurt
Here's my take. Took less than 10 minutes from start to build and to finish. http://imgur.com/llvFZoh.jpg http://imgur.com/TkEPgAv.jpg My point it's this it's way easier than I was thinking. This sub $100 mod is beyond worth it. Will it be more unsafe using this method since I am not putting in a dedicated fuse for the dash camera? Or does it draw so little power its ok? It may larger than ideal for the camera, but close enough.
shutterbc
So every vehicle is equipped with an auto-dimming mirror connector even if it didn't come from factory with that feature? I have an 05 LGT Limited Wagon, would this have that connector in there already and I'd just need the harness to get the power source? Knowing it's this easy it might be the push I need to go out and get a dashcam.Thread resurrection. I have a wagon without dimming mirror. It appears that I have just the male plug but not the wiring harness. I think I'd have to buy the harness just to get the female connector to put the voltage regulator wires into. Is my understanding correct?

Is my understanding correct? If you choose to do it that way, then yes. You would need to buy the harness that would have ran to your mirror and you'll cut it up and connect your 5v regulator to it. This is an alternate way that isn't shown in the pics from then 1st few posts. I think Vern posted some pics of it later on. I'm sure you could buy just the connector and contacts somewhere out there for cheap but the search would take some time. You could also probably splice or vampire tap into the harness that is in every vehicle near the dome light. shutterbc
I decided to buy the mirror power harness and splice that, just so my tinkering is fully reversible. Working great!

Does anyone know if the part number: H501SAG030 will work with the 4th generation legacy (2005 Legacy, 2.5i)? From the images I can find online, looks like the white connector is the same but I can't find any confirmation that it is. In scouring online retailer descriptions, it seems that there are specific harness for 2009-2013 as well as generic ones with descriptions that say 'will fit 2000-2013'. The most important part is that that white female connector will fit into the port in the overhead lighting compartment.
Will0351
While I appreciate and will reference the info and pics you've Posted to do my own dashcam in my 15' legacy, I want mine To have always on power to utilize the motion capture and such When the vehicle isnt running instead of tapping into an ACC Power line. Any suggestions?
