trailrated32
This may sound like a dumb question ... is there an additive to help protect the turbo? Ive googled the crap out of it and come up with nothing? I have found one but was for sale over seas. So basically my question is ... Is there and additive for a turbocharged vehicle and if so who is it manufactured by? or if I should not put anything in the oil at all. Thanks! apexi
If you're looking to protect the turbo, the best thing you can do in my opinion is use a high quality synthetic oil. No oil additives are ever needed in my opinion.

SBT
Then you're as good to go as possible. That and use a high-quality oil filter. Many of us use Tokyo Roki (either Subaru or Mazda versions). More info in the Mazda filter thread. - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -
Dubz
Subaru filters are really the way to go? I figured they were repackaged with a subaru logo like everything else
SBT
Nope, they all meet the critical high-pressure relief criteria that our engines operate under. Worth it to check-the-specs on any filter you plan to use. It's all in the Mazda Tokyo Roki filter thread. - Pro amore Dei et patriam et populum -

Max Capacity
To also help protect the turbo, check the banjo bolt screens... Make that, remove the banjo filter. Even dino oil will be fine for these turbos as long as you keep up with the oil changes. I got 142,000 miles out of the turbo that came on my wagon. You do know to run at least a 5w-30, a lot of us are running 5w-40. Do not put Mobil 1 5w-30 in these engines. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. turboboost
If you opt for M1, use the 0w-40 European blend. Rotella T6 5w-40 has been the bread and butter for many here.

Doesn't matter what kind it is, no M1. Not enough zinc for the journal bearings. It WILL kill your turbo.

apexi
As far as zinc goes, Mobil 1 0w-40 and rotella 5w-40 have pretty much the same amount of zinc. It's worth noting that zinc levels may go down a little as the oil sees some use. I don't want to link to 100 uoa's, but here's a few. Mobil 1 0w-40 around 1100ppm when new according to mobil, around 1000-1100 in uoa's. http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/motoroil/files/mobil_1_product_guide.pdf http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3161668 http://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/782776-oh-no-another-oil-thread-blackstone-uoa-for-mobil-1-0w40-v-castrol-edge-spt-5w40.html rotella anywhere from 900-1200 in uoa's http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/blackstone-uoa-05-lgt-112k-miles-rotella-t6-5w40-3k-192157.html http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3161668 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2332899

trailrated32
i use the new pennzoil ultra platnum and i always use a subaru filter. the new stuff that is in the black bottle made with natural gas? is this ok? i didnt relies that the amount of zinc would affect anything. I have always used mobile one and when i first bout my leg i used it in that as well. but with the claim of 0 friction in the new pennzoil i quickly switched to that . it has also always been 5w30 as well. is there a better weight like 5w40 that i will benifit from?
