Subyski
Figured I would start a build thread for my new project i picked up about a week ago. its a 2005 LGT with 109k miles. body is in great shape. The previous owner bought the car with a blown turbo, replaced it, drove it for 500-600 miles and the motor went out. I picked it up from him with the intent to put in a motor, and replace my boring 205k mile forester X that I have been driving all year since my WRX was totaled. So far i pulled the motor this past weekend and will start disassembling it tonight. My guess is a spun rod bearing. But thanks to all the threads here documenting the issues. I think I have a good handle on what i need to do. So far the car has a catted Cobb Dp and a slightly used hopefully not ruined VF52 ( 600 miles on the turbo). Timing belt looks brand new so i dont' have to worry about that. So for the list of what I want to get to get it up and running: New SB from Heuberger Subaru, New oil cooler new oil pump Catless uppipe OEM gasket kit oil pickup tube new turbo inlet (old one cracked on removal) maybe injectors and fuel pump? TGV deletes maybe phenolic spacers i have some sitting around but not sure they will fit. EBCS cobb AP or open source leaning cobb AP ( looking for input here not sure what will be the best for tuning i OS tuned my WRX with the help of friends) Ideally i want to run E85 but will get the car running first then work on the corn feeding. On to the photos: Bringing it home: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-10-25_11-29-02_861_zps627c19c9.jpg Removed radiator, and engine accessories: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-10-27_21-40-51_344_zps116642b9.jpg Starting to pull the motor: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-02_16-16-23_402_zpsb596ee6b.jpg Last few taps to get it out: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-02_16-16-37_852_zpsfe5cf05c.jpg Started to disassemble the block: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-04_19-14-03_593_zpsc2bbc074.jpg http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-04_21-52-20_295_zpsea77dd0c.jpg Remnants of a bearing: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-04_21-52-32_706_zpsd380a7bc.jpg Sludge in the oil pan: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-04_21-52-57_685_zps506be1bc.jpg Cam shafts look pretty good: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-04_21-53-46_725_zps32f31472.jpg http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-04_21-54-24_686_zps290f8f70.jpg Hard to see but the white spots are chunks of something http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt4/subieski/2014-11-04_21-55-58_419_zpsf915fb12.jpg
Subyski
Didn't get photos of the cam journals before but they had a bit of scoring on them from the bearing material in the oil. dropped them off at the machine shop yesterday and they are done today only 150 to get them cleaned, decked and cams polished and journals fixed. So glad i didn't have to buy new heads. i was worried for a little bit.

Subyski
Ordered the TIC FU bolts today Also in my research it looks like the 08+ WRX's do not have an oil cooler, so i think i am going to delete mine as well, save a few bucks i can use else where. keenster
Ahhh it might cost more in the long run? Maybe run an external aux oil cooler...? Not too expensive really. But you might want some info from the veterans around here.
Subyski
i will monitor oil pressure and temp the oem cooler is more of a warmer anyway. you can get more cooling running a oil filter relocation kit. than the oem one. There are a bunch of info on nasioc. i don't want to clutter this up with that discussion.
MrTris
Jesus, what's going on with that pan gasket?! Looks like your car's had the pan dropped at least once before -
Subyski
yeah i suspect the PO dropped the pan when he replaced the turbo in hopes of cleaning out the bearing debris no biggie, ill scrap it off, and am having the shop that did the head work dip the pan for me to clean it. The pan doesn't need anything special. Grab a putty knife and scrape the big chunks off, then, get it completely clean with a green Scotch pad. Run through the parts washer 2-3x and you should be good to go - Which pickup tube are you gonna use? I of course, recommend the KB - Use Permatex UltraBlack when putting it back. That last bit was WAYYY too much; just one nice, even bead should be fine, otherwise you risk getting silicone bits into the pan and mucking things up. So glad i didn't have to buy new heads. i was worried for a little bit. Did they check the valves and seats ? these things are know to burn valves. You need to find out. $150 is dirt cheap... Have that machine shop hot tank the oil pan, valve covers. Have then cleaned well. Replace the black o-rings at the intake manifold to TGV with the new larger orange ones. read my click here link. Oh, Get that VF52 checked out, make sure it metal chip free and the bearings are good. Doesn't JmP6889928 do that ? 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Subyski
I am told they did check them and found no issues, but i will ask again when i pick them up. Good idea about the valve covers as well, those seemed easier to clean so i was thinking of cleaning them myself, but if iim dropping off the oil pan might as well have them do the covers. do the larger orange ones come in the gasket kit? Max Capacity
Yes they come in the kit. The 1/2 moons do not, they go at the back of the cam's in the heads. You may want a few crush washers of the banjo bolts too, you will remove both banjo filters. for the valves, my heads were the first set my buddies machine shop had seen that didn't need a valve or two. He does most of the heads for the dealers in the area. Does at least two Subaru heads a week, for the past years. My car has been off the factory tune since 8000 miles when Cobb AP came out, Dec 2004. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). Max Capacity
TGV to heads seals are in the kit. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. MrTris
TGV to heads seals are in the kit. True, but, my experience has taught me that those are garbage. Order the GS ones when you order their exhaust gaskets, too - OP, send a PM to JmP6889928 and he can best advise you on that 52 you've got there -

Max Capacity
Do you have anew oil return hose for the turbo ? Notice how I bolt the turbo to the up pipe. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4783.jpg 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Notice how I bolt the turbo to the up pipe. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x40/92Si/DSCN4783.jpg We keep talking about that oil return hose, and, for as important as it is, we need to come up with a recommended replacement that's A) Easy to source; and B) Somewhat affordable. John sent me a pretty quality piece of Goodyear hose with the turbo, but, I couldn't tell you what it was, other than that it had the Goodyear name on it - I'll ask him to add it to the IDEA thread -
