SubieN8
Looks good! I replaced our Crosstrek's stock speakers with the Kicker Upgraded units from Subaru. Wonder if those are plug n' play with the Legacy too... I guess we will find out!

hockeyref2
Hockeyref2 which car do you have and what stereo system is in it? 2012 Legacy 2.5i premium stock HU, Polk DB 651 front and rear. 2015 Outback 2.5i premium stock HU (larger screen, no navigation) JBL GT7-6 rear and JBL GT7-6c front. Only major difference in installation is that the 2015 front is close to a 6x9 size while rear and both on the 2012 are more rounded holes. The 2015 has insulation on the door panel while the 2012 does not. Could be some other minor differences, but nothing major. pics are from the 2015. agangel
I replaced the stock speakers with Kicker 6x9 components in the front and 6.5 in the rear. It was the best thing I've done so far on my car. It was a real pain to thread the new wires through the rubber tubing in the door jam, but worth it in the end! I think I may eventually put an amp in, I can turn it all the way to max and its just barely too loud, but for now I am happy with the power from the stock head unit. I've been waiting for someone to cram a 6X9 in the front! Clearance wasn't an issue, I assume? What model Kicker (CS?) What brand and model for the rear 6.5s? SubieN8
Anyone know if my Premium with NAV has the center speaker wire? I know the speaker isn't there as it's not the HK system, but wondered if the connection is there and I'd just need the speaker...
Saltdet
Hockeyref2. On the speakers that came out of front doors by chance can you post a photo or product number?wondering by chance if the part number stamped on them is 86301AL75A? These would be the ones you referenced as 6x9.

What brand and model for the rear 6.5s? Front are Kicker 40CSS694, back are Kicker 41KSC674. I called Crutchfield and that is what the guy recommended. I'm pretty happy with their performance! securityguy
You guys are KILLING me...the money just keeps pouring out of my wallet every time I jump on another thread:spin: So just did all my research as an anal engineer would do and also settled on the Kicker 6x9 for the front doors and the Kicker 6 3/4" for the rear doors. Went to Crutchfield as their pricing was actually better and you get the speaker adapters and wiring harnesses at no additional cost. In addition, if you buy two pairs you get a free set of nice headphones that I'll give to one of my boys.

Thinking I'll do this set up too, but maybe upgrade the tweeters too?

The 6x9s I bought were a component system so they came with tweeters. The rear speakers are two way so they have a tweeter in them as well vs. the old ones which were just a woofer. agangel
Mean what is the model number on ones you took out? The model number is P.O.S.... No, if you zoom in on the picture I posted, the model number is very similar to the number you posted. 863.....A. It just has a couple characters that are different. It's a 6 inch speaker in a 6x9 bracket made out of construction paper. The magnet is barely magnetic. I just got back from a 1900 mile road trip and I was so glad I changed them out before hand! Just a tip guys, after you remove the door panel and unplug all the connections, your auto windows won't work. You have to roll them all the way up and hold the buttons up to reset the auto function. You have to do it on the passenger door before the controls on the driver door will be able to roll the passenger window down as well. I spent an hour looking for a cut wire before I figured that out!
Saltdet
Are you getting more volume out of the new speakers at a lower level on the dial?
agangel
Are you getting more volume out of the new speakers at a lower level on the dial? No. In fact I can turn it all the way to max and it still doesn't knock me out, although it is really loud. I need an amp to fully realize the potential, but it was an expense I didn't have the money for, nor the ability to install myself. I may do that later, but for now the speakers perform well enough that I'm not going to worry about it. Here is a picture of the rear speaker and what I put in instead. Apparently my photos are too big to post more than one at a time.

securityguy
Speakers come with an install bracket that attaches to the car and then the speaker to the bracket if you order through Crutchfield. My speakers shipped and arrive tomorrow:) This is what I ordered: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_20641KS674/Kicker-41KSC674.html?tp=94 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_20641KS694/Kicker-41KSC694.html?tp=91 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120828148/Metra-82-8148-Speaker-Mounting-Brackets.html?tp=2824 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_120828146/Metra-82-8146-Speaker-Mounting-Brackets.html?tp=2824 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_12071035L/Metra-71-035LC-Speaker-Wiring-Harnesses.html?tp=3097
agangel
The brackets crutchfield sends aren't a perfect match, so I did have to drill a new hole or two. But it was a simple fix.
securityguy
So...big update here for all of you with the HK sound system. Got my speakers today and started with the front passenger door. To agangel's point above, the brackets aren't exact but do the trick for a factory install. Fire up the speaker before I put the door panel back on (I've done installs many times before and learned from my past mistakes) and nothing but bass. No high's...no mid's....just good, solid bass. Checked both speakers and nothing wrong with them so called Crutchfield Tech Support. Answer is this: If you have a HK system, the amp has a built in cross-over. Therefore, only bass is routed to the front door speakers. If you want to get high's and mid's out of the doors themselves, you need to get a component speaker set-up and tap into the factory amp under the seat...run wires...route through the door (BIG pain in the @$$) and go from there. Decided that it's not worth it so just going to send the front and rears back and get a full credit. In all honesty, I never thought the HK system sounded bad...I actually like it but just thought I'd go for a higher quality speaker set-up since I had a few hundred bucks burning a hole in my pocket:bbq: The magnet on the HK speakers is very different than that of the non-HK set-up and far more robust so you do get far better speakers with the HK set-up. I'll attach a pic for reference to what others posted previously. I'll look for something else to spend my $200 on...like a dash cam:)
