2.2 out of a non-egr 5 speed work in a 98 LGT?

Recommended Posts

Pretty much what the title says...I picked up a white 98 LGT with a blown engine for cheap. Been looking for an engine. I found one out of a 95 Legacy L for cheap. Full engine, just pulled for part out. How hard is the swap? Will ecu for the lgt work? The guy said the 2.2 was non-egr...

as far as swaps go it is one of the easiest.

but the no-EGR will give you a CEL trouble code, forever.

it will run fine, but you will have the light/ code.

if you or your state inspection can live with that, no problem.

another solution is to get a complete intake manifold from an EGR 2.2L car, 95 - 98 and use that.

you will have to do the ''non-egr work around'' but that is easy.

just a few pieces of hose and connectors.

That's awesome news. It sucks about the CEL. I'm assuming the 2.2L is fairly, ehrm...slow. I wonder what the gas mileage would be like for a healthy one.

State inspection is not an issue. However, selling the car I'd like to get rid of the code. "Non-egr work around"? I'll search for that...Just have to find a complete intake manifold from an EGR 2.2L...somewhere...

if you have not driven the ej25 car, you will not notice a difference.

the ower curve is a little different,

less low end for the ej22,

but it will run the car just fine.

same,

both engines are rated about the same.

i get 23 mpg on the hiway in my 97GT w/ ej22. (70mph)

that is not great in my opinion,

but it is what i get.

and i don't feel like chasing 2mpg with lots of time and labor.

i should, but i'm not.

a complete intake can be had for about $65 - $75 @

be sure to read up on some of the ''things to do '' before you install your ej22,

like the oil separator plate, A MUST.

front oil seals, recommended but probably done with the timing parts.

all new timing components, not a must since a failure will not damage anything.

maybe the valve cover gaskets if they show oil wet underneath.

The engine is non-interference?

I'm gonna search around for this oil-separator plate...

I found an IM from a 96 EJ22 automatic, is that EGR? Without seeing pictures, details are pretty fuzzy about what years / engines are EGR and which aren't.

That post also mentions "You'll need to get a single-port exhaust header/y-pipe for the '96-'98 EJ22" baehh....is that not stock?

I found an IM from a 96 EJ22 automatic, is that EGR?

yes, 99% sure.

a visual will confirm.

EGR is found on MOST ej22s from auto trans cars.

it is not found on most ej22s from manual trans cars.

i would say all, but i know one guy, a very knowledgeable and experienced guy,

who swears he has seen an egr engine in a manual trans car.

i cant prove he is wrong,

but i can not find ANY documentation to support his experience.

so we say EGR is on MOST auto trans ej22 cars, 95 - 98.

the 98 GT ej25 engine has dual port exhaust and EGR, (auto and manual) .

the 95 ej25 engine has dual port exhaust and no egr on manual trans cars.

you already have the correct y-pipe.

if this were ''giving blood to the red cross'',

the 95 ej22 (from and auto trans car) would be the universal donor, 0-Neg.

it will fit any car 95 - 98, easily.
